DaVinci Resolve segfaults when trying to render text

[hazelnot]

I got home and I’m not on the Intel iGPU laptop anymore and instead on my AMD dGPU desktop, but now I’m having a different issue with DaVinci Resolve - it now seems to crash (with no error message) whenever it attempts to render text in Fusion.

The error I’m getting when running it from the terminal is [1] 16814 segmentation fault (core dumped) /opt/resolve/bin/resolve, and I’ll paste the contents of ResolveDebug.txt below as well:

I guess these errors are mostly related … to an project file that includes some optional dependencies that are not being installed on the Desktop PC ? At least in relation to libDeckLinkAPI.so as well as OpenVR. No clue why it’s having issues in relation to Qt as well as wayland.

Have you downloaded the related file from BlackMagic website and placed it manually in the yay cache folder ~/.cache/yay/davinci-resolve/ ?

IMPORTANT!

Since version 19.1.3-2 this package will not download automatically the source file from the upstream site.

To build this package you will need to manually download the file from https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/support/family/davinci-resolve-and-fusion and place it in the same directory with the PKGBUILD.

This would reduce the mess in this package, making it more readable and clear. Also bypassing the required information from the upstream URL is not allowed in an automated way.

I did that when I installed 19.1.4-1, a day or two before the -2 update. There is no DaVinci Resolve 19.1.4-2, it’s just a patch to the AUR package, the installer is the same (19.1.4), and if I hadn’t put it in the correct place it simply wouldn’t have installed at all

I’m not a user of DaVinci Resolve… therefore I can’t really tell if a update will succeed or not, in case the manual download of the required file has been forgotten by accident and the old installer files has been used instead.

Also, keep in mind that this forum is related to Endeavour OS in the first place… and the first address for support would be the BlackMagic forum.

All I can tell from that error log is:

OpenVR, which isn’t listed as a dependency in the AUR package, can’t be found. Also, the libDeckLinkAPI.so, which is related to BlackMagics Desktop Video software which has to be installed separately, can’t be found by the software.

Don’t exclude them directly as a source of the issue. OpenVR is available in the AUR and its install size is less than a megabyte. Additionally, DaVinci Desktop Video is available for linux as an installer on their site, therefore I wouldn’t exclude it definitely.

There are also issues related to fairlight within your logs that didn’t catched my attention directly.

Ok so, turns out it’s cause I have an AMD graphics card. Fusion just crashes on Linux on AMD, ironic cause I got this graphics card years ago because my old one was Nvidia which isn’t as supported for games, but as people in the Resolve community put it, “AMD sucks on Linux, it’s only useful for video games and the desktop, for anything else you need Nvidia”

@hazelnot, I jumped into an old DaVinci Resolve Studio project yesterday which had a couple different text elements in it and upon trying to render it (Deliver), encountered issues when it came to these text elements.

Now the interesting thing is, I’m using a workstation Nvidia GPU (A4000), so if we are encountering a similar issue, I don’t believe it relates to using an “AMD graphics card”. I’m using an AMD CPU, but there is no AMD GPU (integrated or otherwise) in my system.

What seems to be working so far, is re-creating the text elements from scratch. Even though the defined properties are identical, it for some reasons seems to be making a difference. I only had two text elements in my particular timeline, so hopefully you don’t have a lot

Well, it’s not the same issue for sure, because I tried starting a new project and the same thing happened when I tried to create a new text box, and soon after that I realized that trying to get Fusion to render anything at all was causing the same thing to happen.

I looked into that, and yeah Fusion just does not work on Linux on non-Nvidia cards unfortunately, it just crashes when trying to display anything.

I fired up Davinci Resolve Studio on my AMD laptop, started a new project, threw a couple Fusion text elements on the timeline… and locked the system up for a good while before it finally crashed

I think I have it working on my AMD laptop. I was able to scrub the timeline with multiple overlapping Fusion text elements, and successfully render it. I was (and still am) using these drivers before when it was failing, and still now it’s working:

• mesa 1.25.05-1 (OpenGL)
• rocm-opencl-runtime 6.4.0-1 (OpenCL)

What seems to have worked, is running DaVinci Resolve with these environmental variables set:

ROC_ENABLE_PRE_VEGA=1 RUSTICL_ENABLE=amdgpu,amdgpu-pro,radv,radeon,radeonsi DRI_PRIME=1 QT_QPA_PLATFORM=xcb

I edited my DaVinci Resolve shortcut to define those as environment variables, but you can also just run Resolve from the command line, if you want to test it first:

ROC_ENABLE_PRE_VEGA=1 RUSTICL_ENABLE=amdgpu,amdgpu-pro,radv,radeon,radeonsi DRI_PRIME=1 QT_QPA_PLATFORM=xcb /opt/resolve/bin/resolve
