Das Grub-DIsaster

Hallo EOS-User,

Weiß jemand was da eigentlich wirklich passiert ist?

Secure Boot:
“Selected boot image did not authenticate. Please press enter to attempt boot to next device.”
“Selected boot image did not authenticate. Please press enter to attempt boot to next device.”
Jetzt war guter Rat teuer-was tun?
“Selected boot image did not authenticate. Please press enter to attempt boot to next device.”

This is basically the forum thread provided as a webpage.

Hello Zircon34,

Yes, but i have to try this, because at the setup of my HP Z4 G4 workstation I can only choose
“Legacy-Support activated and Secure Boot deactivated”
But this time it makes no sense trying to choose that, because the setup holds not what I choose-since the grub-Update! I cannot boot from USB-Drive and also not from CD/DVD-ROM I get always:
“Selected boot image did not authenticate. Please press enter to attempt boot to next device.”
Thursday the HP-Technican will come. I have to wait!
Nevertheless as long as I can boot no Live-Iso I cannot repair grub. Anything has happened to my hardware since the grub-Update-I have no other idea.

Thanks mbod,

Chomsky had send this page too and I have read it.

But if you run the iso offline, the grub problem has not yet been introduced. I assume you should be able to boot the iso, but need to use legacy to create the USB drive if you computer uses legacy else won’t be able to boot. Just a suggestion.

Hello Zircon34,

Yes, but I cannot boot by USB and also not by CD/DVD my PC means always:
“Selected boot image did not authenticate. Please press enter to attempt boot to next device.” This is effected by the activated Secure Boot at the Setup. But I cannot deactivate Secure Boot in the Setup. If I try to deactivate Secure Boot in the Setup-Setup does not accept this! It holds not my adjustments and goes back to the state before means to the activated Secure Boot
I do not know why? This since the grub-Update!
So there is no way to boot anything-also not the Live-Iso. Tommorrow comes the Engineer from Hewlett Packard because they´re Support means my Motherboard is defect and I will get
a new. I hope then the setup will accept what I do and I can boot the Live-Iso for to repair grub on the installed EOS.

I would say it could be a side-effect of the update … as it boots directly into the firmware setup it could be that this activates secure boot from the firmware itself… not that it is what should happen… but it could happen… its not the same as on older Bios systems anymore… nowadays software from OS can change value inside firmware also… at least it interacts.

Same for changing the default boot order what can be done from the OS level with efibootmgr p.e.

Hallo Doktor,

“Selected boot image did not authenticate. Please press enter to attempt boot to next device.”.

That’s not great but hopefully fixes your issue!

Hallo Doktor,

MBD S Z4 G4-COREX

“clearing and resetting cmos”:

Hallo Doktor,

Gruss EOZ

HP laptop/desktops now have an “annoying” feature, you have to type a code to change secure boot. You have to let it boot after the change and you should see a screen similar to the following:

Screen image

Mine was a little different, so read closely what yours may ask you to do. Not sure if this will work in your case, but thought it worth a mention.

Hello haakoth,

Yes, everytime I changed the Secure Option, my PC reboots and show a code I have to give in for to change the new boot order. I have done this several times but it takes no effect! The Settings stay as they was before I changed it at the setup.Anything set them always back-since the grub-Update!

Good idea but sorry also not the solution. The HP-Engineer didn´t come today. One chance may be to reset the CMOS.But till now I do not found out how this goes. What I found is, that the Mainboard-Battery have to put out for 30 seconds. But then it could be that the CMOS is not really resetted. I know it so that further two PINs have to be bridged, for to reset the CMOS really. But which one?

Best regards EOZ

I didn’t see that mentioned, and I spent an inordinate amount of time being stubborn before I looked it up to find out why it would not keep Secure boot on my HP (My last was almost 10 yrs old). Glad you already had that in hand.

I might be missing some of the essence with the translation, but it looks like you might be looking for the CMOS/PSWD or PSWD button? That appears to be at the end of slot 3 and down just slightly. The manual/doc says it has a blue jumper, but all pictures of replacement boards have a black jumper.

Apologize if I missed again, and hope you get it figured out or the technician shows up!

Hello haakoth,

The technician comes today, I hope he con give me more information. Especially how I can reset the CMOS. if similar happens again.
I think Secure Boot is nothing we need. On my HP-Mobile Workstation Secure Boot is deactivated and nevertheless Win Pro 11 runs in UEFI-Mode without any Problems. Sorry, that my English needs more education. But I hope it will become better. by trying to use it, for to solve my problems.

Thanks EOZ

No to need to say sorry for your english, it is very good. I was referring to the translation google was giving me, I should have been clearer on that point.

It would be interesting to know how he solves this issue for you, and if the CMOS button does exist and where. I would say that is a fair assessment of Secure boot, based on web sources and the one Win11 unit (HP laptop) I have, with EOS as primary use OS.

I am old, still not sure I trust this but: (Google translate)
