I just refreshed the page I was on and it turned to a dark theme. I clicked the hamburger menu top right and found the option to change it. Is this a new forum feature?
In my opinion, this feature has always been there. I don’t know exactly, I use mozilla dark reader. Everything is dark/nord with me
Are we talking about the same feature?
Yep. OK. Odd, though. All I did was refresh the page and the whole forum turned to the dark theme. My personal preference is light theme. I cannot take white text on a dark background. Just like I really do not like system-wide dark themes for my Linux installs.
The feature was already there, but I changed the default forum setting to Endeavour dark to connect it more with the new main website.
@Bryanpwo Thanks for the clarification.
Apparently. Just like Knowing your desktop screenshots . Either bright or twilight
Exactly.
For my Arch KDE Plasma, I use Twilight. For my Endeavour OS Cinnamon, I use Arc or Arc-inspired themes. I love the mix of dark and light rather than just solid dark or solid light.
Arc themes are timeless. Beautiful gtk themes. Last update for plasma was around 2 years ago. Didn’t use it long time.
I feel the same way. I find this negative font very tiring to read. It occasionally gives me a headache. I’ve never been able to understand the hype for me.
I’ve also been using Twilight from the beginning and I’m glad that with Plasma 6.2 and Framework 6.8 some basic bugs have finally been fixed.
There is a “hype” surrounding dark themes, but it’s also a kind of accessibility thing.
For instance, if you change to a dark theme at night, and you’re reading in the dark, then you switch to a webpage or app that has a light theme, this can have varying results depending on each person.
For me, it can trigger a near instant migraine.
So, I have my Firefox, Thunderbird, system, and other apps set to dark themes to avoid this.
I totally agree. I get the accessibility issue. Makes perfect sense. As for just aesthetics/appearance, I never understood the appeal of everything being dark. But that’s just me. And the beauty of Linux… the ability to make any Linux install a completely personal experience.
Well yeah. Sometimes I see people’s themes and I think, . However, that is subjective to what I like, and since it’s their chosen theme on their system, it doesn’t matter what I think of it. Someone could be disgusted by my chosen theme, and that’s fine.
Choice is what matters.
That’s why I said “for me” … I have a professional background in typography / layout and find these forced color schemes and inconsistencies that force a switch to a dark theme (software-based, not manually designed) extremely bad. Take a look at any page on amazon in dark mode (dark reader)! Horrible! Inconsistencies that send a shiver down my spine. And then this change from a dark website to a light one … I’d rather have everything light, it hurts the eyes less because the pupils don’t have to keep readjusting. But all this is just an IMHO …
There are some websites and apps that implement dark and light themes from the ground up, and I’d say this is what should be done on all the major platforms. This would be beneficial to users in both camps, being able to choose what suits them.
But, most companies will want you to experience their website/app in a particular way.
For instance, I saw a news article less than a week ago that an Apple-based website now has dark mode. I laughed because why is something so simple making the news as a notable update? Because Apple is notorious for wanting its users to experience something a certain way, with little to no customisation.
Which is why I love that @Bryanpwo has the dark/light switcher on the EndeavourOS main site.
THIS is the main problem … too many inconsistencies at all …
I prefer reading black on white so I have everything on light mode. Personally I think it looks more aesthetically pleasing, especially in Plasma.
