Today I decided to test the boot from a snapshot and perform a restore from there.
It worked… restore @ and @home
I pushed a fix for this warning a few minutes ago.
It am not going to push it out ahead of the next release because it is only a warning.
The changes queued for 1.4 are now available for testing in btrfs-assistant-git
This release is mostly UI enhancements and code optimizations.
Here is the full changelog:
- Redesign the layout of the Subvolume tab(Contributed by Austin Horstman)
- Modify the subvolume tab so it shows the subvolumes on all devices(Contributed by Austin Horstman)
- The subvolume tab now can filter container subvolumes(With contributions from Adam Sowa)
- The Subvolume grid is now sortable and the backend was optimized(Contributed by Adam Sowa)
- Reworked the Snapper tab into separate tabs for New/Delete and Browse/Restore removing the Restore Mode checkbox
- The grids on the Snapper tab now support sorting by any field
- Renamed “Btrfs” tab to “Overview” and “Snapper - Settings” to “Snapper Settings”
- Add refresh buttons to Snapper tabs
- When snapper commands fail properly report them back to the user
- Fix Qt warnings when running btrfs-assistant --version
Thank you @dalto
Btrfs Assistant is a breath of fresh air, and to have the dev listening to users and implementing changes/fixes, that’s awesome!
EDIT
I love that the snapshots are up to 272 and still counting ![]()
And i’m not going to say how many times I have restored, but ach time it was as expected.
I’ve been contemplating doing a fresh install to switch over the btrfs and this assistant just might push me over the edge to do it now…
@Scotty_Trees pushes @waterbuffalo. It was very effective. ![]()

when I try to switch to btrfs-assistant-git it tells me the that the version number is 1.1.r21.g7206fdb-1 is that right?
Most *-git don’t get a real version number until you build the package and the pkgver function is run. When you install it, it should switch to 1.4.something based on the most recent commit.
ok yeah it is 1.4.r59 now that it is installed. I was just making sure I was installing the right thing since 1.1 seemed to be backwards from the 1.4 from the non-git version.
The version 1.6 changes were just merged to main so anyone using btrfs-assistant-git should be getting them shortly.
Here is the full changelog:
- Add a context menu to the subvolume page that sets read-only status, deletes subvolumes and creates new snapshots(Contributed by Adam Sowa)
- Add the ability to delete multiple subvolumes
- The subvolume backups made by Btrfs Assistant can now be restored
- Add an option to add a name to the subvolume backups(Contributed by Zesko)
- Add more detail to the subvolume tab table(Contributed by Adam Sowa)
- The file browser is now sortable and the columns can be manually resized(Contributed by Adam Sowa)
- Add support for deleting Snapper snapshots from the subvolume tab
- Fix an issue where deleted Snapper configs were not being removed from UI(Contributed by Austin Horstman)
- Fix an issue where the snapshot grid was not being refreshed properly
- Fix issue where Snapper file reading was stopping on unprocessed elements
- Remove some of the nested frames/boxes from the UI
Thank you for all the work you do on such an awesome tool to complement btrfs and snapper.
I am lucky to have a growing team of contributors that has helped keep it moving forward.
well thank you to them as well.
ok, so I had this issue back in November that we had discussed where BTRFS assistant(but on the Garuda forms) would open up as root automatically. Now I am having a similar but different issue. Now the root dialog box doesn’t open up if I try to open it up in the GUI method, but if I try to open it up in the terminal it says “this application needs to be run as root” but opens fine if I use sudo or if I run pkexec btrfs-assistant and I will get the password prompt like normal when doing so.
This is normal.
That is strange. What DE are you using? Can you check btrfs-assistant.desktop? It should be running pkexec btrfs-assistant --xdg-desktop=$XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP
I just realized it is all things that uses pkexec not specificly a btrfs-assistant problem (tried gparted and same situation.)
I am running a hybrid i3/xfce system so I am sure it is something to do with that.
Make sure you have a polkit agent running.
IMHO, Btrfs Assistant should be default once Btrfs is checked in Calamares.
I did have it running, but it still wasn’t working right. I am sure it had something to do with installing Xfce/i3 on top of KDE and then getting rid of KDE. That whole situation caused more problems than I thought it would, so I finally gave up and started fresh, and every thing is working now. From now on when I want to change DEs I will just start fresh to be on the safe side from now on.
This GUI is really handy! Excellent work!
I was trying to switch from timeshift to snapper and this tool made my life so much easier. I’ve created the snapper config using the GUI just now and will wait to see automatic snapshots appear (currently only have the “boot” one).
By the way, I’m using it with GNOME 42 and was wondering whether there is a way for me to activate the dark theme?
