Neil Gaiman: The Ocean at the End of the Lane
This is a very good book. I read it last summer.
If I’m remembering it right, there are three parts to this.
I picked it up from the library because I had earlier read 1984 by George Orwell, and I thought 1Q84 by Murakami is related somewhat. Turned out that wasn’t the case, but liked the book still.
I don’t usually go in for short stories, but this collection has one of my favourite authors in Adrian Tchaikovsky. So far it’s been a very enjoyable read.
I have learned over the years that it usually worth it to follow the enjoyable (or at least readable!) authors - regardless of the format. Your odds are so much better!

It is a very good primer on the history of the Eastern Roman Empire, also known as the Byzantine Empire by historians, which fell in 1458. Nearly 1,000 years after the “fall” of the Roman Empire.
