Blinking cursor fresh install with Gnome

I suspect something is up with GDM but I’m not sure. Yesterday evening I did a fresh install just selecting gnome for DE which I suspect is setting GDM as as the DM and got greeted with a blinking cursor.

When trying with Budgie and then installing Gnome additionally it works which from what I understand is using lightdm.

Where is best to report such issues, I presume it’s upstream somewhere?

Apologies I’m not that familiar with DMs.

Maybe @joekamprad would have an idea?

yes i do have a lot a ideas on that

  • hybrid graphics (intel + nvidia or amd) missing drivers
  • seems x11 does not find any monitor… ?
  • installation is corrupted by missing install packages cause by network issue
  • Bios settings do not setup to use the right GPU
  • the installer log would put out some of the possibilities:
    cat /var/log/Calamares.log | curl -F 'f:1=<-' ix.io
1 Like

Thanks for the advice.

  • It’s on my Laptop a Dell XPS 15 which has hybrid graphics but I believe I am just using the intel.
  • Could be point 2, but I’ll need to look into how x11 is setup (n00b)
  • I don’t think it is - tried multiple installs
  • Tried PopOS and that uses GDM afaik and had no issues.
  • Installer log http://ix.io/2Hl8

What was weird is that I had an install from Feb which I Did an update and rebooted and then it happened… I had all backed up anyway and wanted to do a fresh install so did and it was exactly the same which is why I suspected something with the packages.

Any further advice?

This doesn’t have anything to do with the xf86-video-intel file?

I have no idea what happened I just tried on gdm to go to another tty with ctrl + alt + f2 and then back with ctrl + alt + f1.

Waited a few seconds then the gnome login appears.

Weird but it worked - What could cause that?

Any further advice? It’s def not install related - I did another reinstall and it’s the same issue.

How can I debug this further? I have a work around so it’s not blocking just would love to figure this out

boot journal could help:

lspci > log.txt && lsusb >> log.txt && journalctl -b -0 >> log.txt && cat log.txt | curl -F 'f:1=<-' ix.io

(includes system specs)

It could be that GNOME tries to start wayland session and hard fail on that, as usually it would fallback to xorg session, but caused by hybrid graphics it can be that it can not handle this, I would try to simple install nvidia driver and see if it works then:
sudo pacman -S nvidia nvidia-settings linux-headers
sudo mkinitcpio -P
sudo grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg
but you can check first if you can switch to xorg session from login screen by choosing “Gnome in Xorg”

Here’s the output of that: http://ix.io/2J0M

Interestingly I use xorg as I had issues with some apps with wayland (Selected via login screen).

I’ll have to play with the nvidia stuff - always had problems in the past so avoided going down that route

looking this I would give it a try with installing Nvidia driver and taking xorg session from GDM!

It worked! Thanks so much

I was always reluctant to use nvidia as I had issues before - will def look into a way to switch between this and the intel GPU going forward optimus manager looks promising.
Thanks for the help :))

p.s. I see you’re from Berlin too - hope you have a good Christmas + NYE
