Running wayland and noticing minecraft started causing issues. Running latest linux kernel 6.16.3-arch1-1 and noticed those are being pushed out rapid fire this last week so likely a kernel issue.

Not sure if there is anything that can be done other than maybe switch to LTS kernel.

Out of curiosity, doesn’t the latest mainline Linux kernel, i.e. 6.16.x in 2025, have all the fixes of the LTS kernel and new features/capabilities? Features/Capabilities that are missing from the LTS kernels. Or am I missing something?

Yes. And new features can introduce bugs resp. regressions which you do not see in the LTS kernel.

@AceFour which LTS kernel did you try out, 6.12.x or 6.6.x or 6.1.x.

Please do not note that some of these kernels are hosted in AUR so please be careful while installing or using them. Recently there has been a spate of disturbances in the force, i.e. people trying to upload malicious packages in AUR.

p.s. Sorry could not give the links to the other LTS kernels from AUR, the AUR website just crashed with the message, “502 Bad Gateway”

Someone had posted a issue similar to this but for AMD Ryzen 7 5700x3d, GPU RX7900xt running Wayland on Linux mainline kernel 6.15.x on the Arch Forum website.

The difference is that it happens randomly and not while playing minecraft.

Maybe this should be kicked upstairs to the Linux Kernel mailing list?

6.12.x and it was not me that posted. I have an Intel CPU. I might do that as it doesn’t take long to fail with me and pretty consistent

So basically it does to appear to be an issue with AMD GPU.

And appears they have no idea either. Tried some other desktops on Wayland and X11 and none work and the graphical tearing is worse then it has ever been. Not holding my breath that this will be fixed quickly and not important enough for me to start downgrading everything.

On a side note I’m kind of digging Cosmic desktop. I don’t know how long I will use it as I am a Hyprland/NeoVim/TMUX do everything with a keyboard kind of guy. However my wife has just about had it with Microshaft and wants me to drop linux on her laptop. This desktop is pretty easy to use for her.

Have you checked if there is a newer Bios update?

Edit: Looks like a GDK/GTK+ issue.

Ok, updated the bios and fired up minecraft . . . the tearing is pretty bad. I had all the effects off. It lasted about 2-3 minutes and then crashed. However this time there wasn’t anything in the journal for amdgpu so I guess that is a positive.

The screen still goes dark and I have to hard reset the machine.

Messed with so many settings I don’t know which end is up. So, I reinstalled a clean OS with KDE Plasma. Fired up minecraft and graphic tearing was still there. Game ran for a while zooming around and then it finally crapped out. Here was the amdgpu output from the journal

This has been reported on CachyOS as well.

I would try https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/linux-amd-git but when you makepkg it errors our cloning the repo from freedesktop. Apparently they are having issues too.

Have you looked in the BIOS under security advanced to see if you can disable PSP?
