A random question about Linux distros

Just use rEFInd instead.

No. The grub menue looked as ever, but suddenly displayed an error message when I tryed to start EOS.

Truth be told, I rarely boot into windows anymore and even more rarely allow it to update (metered network connection trick.) My trashed grub was a Mint install, but fortunately it was just the grub bootstrap, not the install.

I rarely boot into Windows too. :grinning:

Yes, it is common when it does a Windows 10 version upgrade.

It will do the same unless you also have separate efi partitions.

So Grub came up, but couldn’t start Linux (but could start Windows)?
That seems to be a different issue than the “common” one, that Windows just sets itself as starting automatically without involving GRUB.

This honestly does not sound like something caused by Windows directly. It sounds like a drive had the wrong UUID all of a sudden, something I don’t know how to happen.

Sorry, I do not remember exactly if I could start Windows from grub. I remember that grub was damaged and could not start EOS. Because I knew how to repair grub with a live system I did not check, what excatly was damaged in grub.

Why do Debian “fixed release” distributions seem to have packages that are always 2+ years out of date? Or is that my perception.

Like I just tried Ubuntu today and basically one of the first things I did was try to install dolphin-emu which had some fixes and features added years ago that I use and the website pointed me to a unmaintained ppa… Other people say “build from source” which I could do but seems already less user friendly than arch :frowning:

Debian stable is long-lived so depending on where you are in the release cycle it can easily have packages that are 2 years old.

Redhat/Centos/Oracle is even longer lived than debian stable. Right before a new release the packages are ancient.

If you want fresh packages, I don’t think debian stable is a good choice.

As much as i like Debian because it is the Grandfather of Linux this is the reason. It’s always just too far behind.

I would recommend:

  • Kubuntu
  • MX Linux (has a KDE Plasma-Version now)
  • Solus

That title goes to slackware the oldest and still running Linux Distro

Slackware is more like that crazy drunk uncle that believes in all sorts of conspiracy theories :joy:

Just kidding, I love slackware  They’re both grandfathers of the Linux eco system due to their age

Huh? What has the one to do with the other? I fail to make the connection.

If Clem weren’t so fukn stubborn and stupid they could be on DW’s #1 spot right now, where MX resides for reasons unknown and for much too long already. I really don’t know what else Canonical has to do to finally convince Clem to break it off with Ubu and go with the LMDE version exclusively.

Clem is just proving his point over and over to Mark Shuttleworth for dismissing Mint all those years ago

They were out basically in the same year.

Oh my God, does that make me a grandfather of this forum?

Upon reflection, would that be a virtual grandfather?
