Hey fam. I came across a pretty neat and reliable replacement for Zoom. It’s free, open source and works flawlessly. Both links below are the same platform, but the only difference being how each one is hosted. I encourage you to take a close look and hope you find value in them. It has all the practical features you would want and need from Zoom. Cheers!
I clapped but something in the back of my head screaming red flag.
Also you might also want to check out FSF endorsed Jitsi: https://jitsi.org/
I came across Jitsi before Mirotalk and didn’t like how they switched from no account required to requiring accounts. They have a ton of complaints in the reviews, so it kind of scared me off. Do you use it?
What is screaming red flag to you? Mirotalk is on GitHub. All code is available for audit.
I don’t know. Something about it looks suspiciously too organized, maybe I’m wrong.
Has someone audited it? I am not a programmer.
I love how it being organized is suspicious. That’s great
It’s like something that want to present itself as “business ready”, “Professional”, “trustworthy”.
I have seen plenty of scams using similar marketing tactics. From video games, cryptoscams predominantly, and other services.
But like I said, I could be wrong.
I love Jitsi, don’t use it enough. On par with gurgle meets as far as features but to join a meeting you could stay anonymous but to start a meeting they always wanted an email or to know who you were. I’m not dissuaded from keeping Jitsi as my ‘free and open source alternative to Zoom.’
are you saying Jitsi is not open to audit?
I will check out your links. If features are zoom-like instead of googlemeets-like I will evaluate it soon. I don’t know what you mean by all the hosting stuff but I will check it out when I have time.
The p2p version I believe splits the bandwidth equally. It relies on the connection of all users.
The SFU version puts the connection reliability on the host who creates the room.
That’s been my understanding of it. They explain it further on their GitHub page.
just had a look at microtalk and agree with @proficiency - too good to be true. so many cool features, a polished, fancy website… all free and only one developer?
May be it’s working brilliant and the page/company is in an early state and will grow over time, but somehow too good to be free.
It’s been in dev since early 2021. There are hundreds of forks.
I don’t think the red flags are warranted.
“Just because you’re paranoid doesn’t mean they aren’t after you.” seems to be a sort of absurd logic that I’ve seen many proponents for without really presenting any evidence to the fact that “THEY are after you” in fact.
Zoom
Seems to me if your client is using Zoom, then using Zoom is the best option. For friends & Family, use whatever you like. Sadly (?), we live in a world where Skype & Zoom are used for business purposes. Not liking or wanting to use them simply means you can’t meet with those who do.
Largely true but that shouldn’t discourage us from at the very least planting a seed in the minds of the less aware. Always worth a try
Yes, what’s the downside though?!
or the inverse: can any skeptic prove or say with confidence that ‘they’ aren’t after the person who claims ‘they’ are after them? The absurd logic goes both ways…
Also–for the trivially-minded, I always credit this quote to Frank Burns, who I saw blather this exact line in MASH so long ago.
The only thing that can be “deduced” of “Just because you’re paranoid doesn’t mean they aren’t after you.” is that “You are being paranoid”. Their being after you or not remains in the realm of uncertainty unless proven otherwise in either direction.

not remains in the realm of uncertainty unless proven otherwise in either direction.
yep. cannot be proven or dis-proven, agreed.
I love jitsi, I’ve been using their free account for a while now without issues. I use it video chat with the folks, and my Mom and Aunt use it to chat for hours
So…if the website was less well designed and looked more amateur, we would be less likely to be suspicious of it?
That seems logically flawed somewhere…
