A Framework surprise

The founder and CEO of Framework, Nirav Patel, has approached us to test our releases on their hardware.

For those who are unfamiliar with the company, Framework produces laptops and Desktops that can be customized at purchase by choosing the preferred components like screens, CPU, RAM, graphic cards and more.
The unique selling point for their products is the easy repairability due to the replaceable components but also the upgradeability in the future, reducing e-waste.

The Framework team discovered, after post-purchase surveys, not telemetry, that a large number of customers use EndeavourOS on their laptops. To give better support for them, they approached us to test our releases on their hardware and provide them with feedback.
We were genuinely surprised by the offer, and perhaps unnecessary to say, we said yes to their offer.
To be clear, the offer is for their community support only, and it isn’t a business deal. We, Joe Kamprad in this case, received a Framework laptop to provide that feedback, so there is no advertisement or paid content deal going on between Framework and us.

On the 10th of March, @joekamprad received the package, and they sent us the following.

We will increase RAM and storage space using our Open Collective balance, thanks to our generous financial supporters.
We want to thank the Framework team for their generous offer and for taking our distro into consideration to add to their community support.

Installing EndeavourOS on the device was completely flawless, not much i can report for now :vulcan_salute:

Currently still into checking around with it.

But if anyone have questions or issues with a framework i will be in for resolving it as i can check on the hardware.

I will go to do some deeper review soon for sure too!

Absolutely fantastic news!
Congrats to the team for providing a distribution that is so loved, as framework’s survey suggests!

Also what framework does to accomodate Linux users is amazing.
My only gripe with them is, I just wish they pushed a bit (or a lot…) harder for upstream Coreboot support.

Nice! You know the usual laptop questions/grips/issues. Check for:

  • sleep/wake
  • hibernate
  • battery life
  • wifi

Interesting that the demographic of EOS users overlaps with the demographic of framework users.

Edit: @Bryanpwo, any chance that Framework shares their survey results? I’m really intrigued by their findings.

I watched your latest YT video & thought it was your own. Never did your “doktor” status cross my mind… :joy: :+1:
Good news, for all the dev team, BTW.

on a similar note , i read an article the other day that says that Huawei might be shipping their new laptops with Linux instead of Harmony.
That just brings joy to my heart lol

That’s amazing! Congrats to the team and community. It’s proof positive that lots of people use and enjoy EndeavourOS. It makes perfect sense to use an Arch-based distro on such new hardware. Knowing that EndeavourOS works well on their products will be make the decision to purchase something from Framework that much easier. Very, very cool!

They didn’t share it with us. The email sent to us only told us that a large amount of users were running EOS and therefore serious enough for them to cooperate with us.

EDIT:
We’re not in a partner affiliate program with them, we are a part of the community supported distros, like Archlinux also is. So, it is unlikely they will share exact figures with us.

Nice to hear from you again Eric!!!

That’s great news! I’m no laptop user, but I would probably consider Framework if I ever was to get one.

If it allows for an out-of-the-box “it just works!” shuttle into space Linux experience, that’s brilliant!

Thanks for the clarification.

This is great news. Been following them for awhile. I like the concept behind their laptops a lot. As long as they offer 2 NVMe slots in a 15.6" laptop or in a 14.5" (?), since this one is a 13.5" then they have my vote.

3 points i will review for sure!

  • sleep/hibernate
  • battery life
  • wifi

What i done is switch to use IWD instead of wpa_supplicant as wifi backend for NetworkManager.

There is already a page on archwiki about the device too:

  • Hibernation is working sleep too, but i have issue on plasma with power saving options manually they do work properly. I will need to check with other DE and i3 to see if it’s really only on KDE.
  • Fingerprint sensor (inside power-button) is working well with fprint.
  • fwupd is working too, no need for a crappy exe file to update firmware ;).

I will go testing with the other Desktops too Gnome will be next as it should support ambient light sensor (exiting)

Framework 16 has 2 NVMe slots as far as I know, and they offer an Add-In Card with 500GB and 1 TB storage in too what can be used on the Framework 13 too.
