Wifi can't reconnect after disconnecting randomly

Hello, it’s been like 3 weeks i did all sorts of stuff in endeavour os but i can’t make the wifi stable. It disconnect randomly and can’t reconnect back if it happens otherwise it works. I heard it might be my realtek driver but i didn’t understood everything. I’m on dual boot and my wifi works well on Windows 11.

Please it’s the only problem i had with Endeavour OS otherwise i learned a lot, i already made a cool rice by my own.

I saved the journalctl from the hour it happened but it’s too long i’m not sure what to look for exactly in it.
I also tried since last time to deactivate the hibernation of windows directly in regedit (already did it with a command in cmd normally) i had less problem with my wifi since but can’t say if it will happen again.

It looks like your WiFi is failing to retrieve an IP address from your router. This pattern is repeated numerous times.

First, it tries to retrieve a DHCP lease (IP address etc) from the router:

dhcp4 (wlan0): activation: beginning transaction (timeout in 45 seconds)

Then 45 seconds later, the failure:

dhcp4 (wlan0): canceled DHCP transaction
dhcp4 (wlan0): activation: beginning transaction (timeout in 45 seconds)
dhcp4 (wlan0): state changed no lease

There’s a couple of things going on which may be causing this.

  • Your WiFi MAC address may be dynamic, which means each time you connect, it’s treating your computer as a new device, which requires a new IP.
  • The address pool on the router may be small, and so there are no leases (IP addresses) available.

I’d suggest getting into the access point settings on your router, and ensuring the DHCP pool is big enough. You may also want to disable randomized MAC address on your system, so you’ll always be assigned the same IP address, rather than having to compete for a new one each time.

Just side note. You’re trying to connect on both 2.4GHz and 5GHz frequencies (not simultaneously, they’re just both available and being tried). This isn’t unusual in itself, but I’d personally recommend using just one. If distance / physical interference isn’t an issue, use 5GHz (higher bandwidth, lower range and penetration). If distance / physical interference is an issue, use 2.4GHz (lower bandwidth, higher range and penetration). If you’re moving around a lot, or its a busy network, maybe both are needed.

I copied the log into a text file locally here, then used grep to help filter the results down. For example:

cat somelog.txt | grep wlan0

That’ll take the file somelog.txt, and pipe it into grep and filter out any line that doesn’t mention wlan0.

You can keep on piping and grepping, to add more filters. Using the previous results, this’ll then also filter any lines that don’t mention dhcp:

cat somelog.txt | grep wlan0 | grep dhcp

Sometimes I’ll write out the filtered version to another text file, and then browse it in a text editor (Kate).

cat somelog.txt | grep wlan0 > somelog-wlan0.txt

That writes the output to a file called somelog-wlan0.txt.

There’s lots more tools that can help with log files. tail and head are two I use fairly often, particularly tail. You can follow a log file in realtime like this:

tail -f somelog.txt

Or you can simply view the last x number of lines of a file. This example grabs the last 50 lines:

tail -n 50 somelog.txt

You can also try using an LLM to help sift through the data. They can be helpful at pointing to a problem area, but they need a fair bit of discretion with what they might recommend.

As needed, I fire up a local and private LLM running in a firejail (Qwen3-Next-80B-Instruct for general queries like this, or Qwen3-Coder-30B-Instruct for development). It can be a bit rough around the edges, but I don’t mind, it keeps my brain engaged :sweat_smile:

Some folk would probably just take it to an online LLM.
