before when i was on windows , i would just do what i need to do on my PC and that’s basically it…very boring.
fiddled here and there to make my desktop “unique”, you know like changing the background color , changing the font , exciting stuff…
but now …now on this Linux …grrrr, there’s endless tinkering possibilities and i can not rest for a minute trying things out.
I’ve been on countless distros , countless different apps to find just the right one , it’s never ending!
for instance just this morning , i been thinking how can i try out sway WM ( i’ve read it here), i have always been on xfce DE.
so now i face another challenge that’s gonna use my time …tinkering…
it never stops , i always find out new things on linux that i want to experiment with.
i call it my linux curse
oh how i miss the days i would stare at my windows screen and thinking “ok what can i do next to occupy me on my pc?”
Costs money, too. Just because of this sort of thing I bought an old, reconditioned PC just to play around with. Never would have happened on Windows …
Before anyone suggests it—I’ve never been really happy with VMs.
I have a cheap, ebay-rescue “beater” T530 ThinkPad with two SSDs in it just for this problem. When I must try a new iso, it goes on the old ThinkPad. That way, I don’t screw up my daily driver. I don’t know if all the variety is a blessing or a curse.
It stops being a problem when you realize all Linuxes (essentially) are the same. You can’t do anything on one that you couldn’t do on another.
True, it may require more thinking and working to replicate.
I, myself, only earlier this week watched PewDiePie’s video and got a yearning to install HyprLand (which I’ve used before). I did manage to successfully beat it off with a stick..and send the yearning back to wherever it came from. So..yes, I understand
I have 4 drives (3 SSD and one HD) in my PC, so I do have room to bare-metal if I really want to, but I’m doing a lot less of it than I used to. I still occasionally spin up a VM and look at configurations sometimes though.
I did exactly the same thing. Now when Windows 10 support will end in this October there will be lots of refurbished laptops in sale. It will cost me more money…
LOL … very funny. So now that you don’t live in your Microsoft home (with 1 fridge) and now can have any breakfast you want at the Linux Grocery store this is a problem :).
I agree … I too am always tinkering and experimenting. Kind of like having a favorite car that makes your wife jealous
stupid linux, stupid absence of bsod, damn lack of daily viruses, it’s rotten you don’t need to do several malware scans a day. why can’t linux be a gigantic keylogger like Windows [see: eula]? linux always playing catch up. worst of all I don’t need to overpay for and shoehorn install several AV/AM programs–I’m tired of keeping money in my pocket. Why can’t we only have Bing wallpapers that change once a day with no customization?
I hear you. I can’t wait to reinstall W7
It took me about 7 years using Linux before I quit “exploring.” I started in 1998 and by 2005 I settled on Ubuntu. I spent countless hours trying different distros and apps. I had given up on Windows by 2005 when Ubuntu became my default. I guess I switched again in 2017 to Debian and Arch, but those were a result of Ubuntu starting to push snap packages. Since 2017, I have been happily steadfast with Debian and Arch. I still look at an occasional spin in a VM, but that is all.
I managed to break my addiction to tweaking by trying to set a standard of 30 Minutes from booting the ISO to a finished installation. I’m pretty close, but I do have a number apps on my “install when needed” list.
