Whoogle effectively killed by Google

Google search, without the baggage, whoogle is now dead:

Ah well, it was good whilst it lasted

I actually took a look at Whoogle not long ago but ended up keeping SearXNG, but I was going to try Whoogle to test at some point due to positive mentions of it. Really more search engine alternatives are required rather than the main big tech companies.

I only know of Yep that has it’s own independent crawler but it’s very slow and in Beta still (Testing it now though it feels like 50% faster to when I last tested) to use but it’s results are pretty decent and better than Bing in my opinion but it’s still building up more and more results. No idea on it’s privacy side though as I don’t use it often.

I hope they find a workaround, I’ve been using Whoogle as my main search engine for several years now. Will see what happens before I switch to something else or before I tried the paid alternative search engine mentioned by the developer in the issue. For now I’ll just use DDG.

DDG uses Bing, it is dreadful :frowning:

While for now it’s better than using Google or do you know something better. If Whoogle doesn’t find a fix or workound I will have a look at Kagi which is mentioned by the developer in the Whoogle issue.

I can vouch for Kagi, it’s what I use at work and it’s been the best service by far.

Great! Good to know it’s a good service if I were to try that. I did just come across a search engine manage by Mullvad but only downside is you have to be connected to Mullvad vpn, I will try it out while Whoogle is currently broken but could be that it’s only working because of cached search results.

I tested Kagi’s trial and it seems decent, but requires an account to use it and is also paid. Usually the paid part is fine for me if something needs support, the main issue is I would need the unlimited one as I easily exceed the 300 search monthly, maybe within two weeks in many cases. There is also a case on trusting Kagi as your account with them will likely store information about usage.

At least when testing the trial using the search and clicking on a page and then selecting the back button counted as a second search even though I was just going back to a search I already done and after a while it could be 5 searches counted when I actually done one. If you are already on unlimited this won’t be noticeable or an issue. Open in new tab could bypass this though.

I have Mullvad VPN but don’t use Leta.

Here is a screenshot if you want to see what it looks like though. It’s fairly basic in functions though.

I have mullvad vpn as well, if gets Google search results that it’s still good. However could be that those search results are cached results since they cache all the users search results.

Oh I see, I thought you meant you didn’t have the VPN so you couldn’t see it.

I meant the downside is that you need their vpn to use it, so that anyone that doesn’t have Mullvad vpn can’t use it.

I like Kagi despite the fact I need to sign in. It feels almost like google when google was good

A quick update to this topic: you can keep your Whoogle instance going for now with user agent spoofing. See relevant comments in the GitHub issue starting here:

For sure! But the question is for how long.

Been using kagi unlimited for 2 years now and its awesome if you are looking for pdfs or researching topics. The Ai so far has not been woke and you have the ability to rank pages. Also has loads of custom css options. Only downside is their image search but you can use the image search plugin and pop over to yandex easy plus if you use tab containders plus the usual privacy tools your actual footprint is neg.
Plus you do not have to keep logging into your kagi acct once you setup your api.
I paid for brave search but its a mission to keep logging in to the search. But brave was like $15 for the year or sumth and it was more of a support to them than an explicit search fucnction boost.
Try kagi’s free daily 100 search i think its worth the money after you see the difference in results.

Brave is a fairly good alternative for me. They have their own crawler unlike DDG which stopped working altogether when Bing went down, it’s acceptably private, and its AI feature works so great for me that I feel sorry for the website operators it takes the answers from because I often don’t need to visit any page to get the answer I’m looking for xD Of course, it’s a corporate and not completetly independent OSS project, but it works for me fairly well and as long as it’s not Google/Microsoft/Meta/Apple/Amazon/Chinese/Russian, it’s fine for me xD
