Gnome3 @ 4K is great. Only DE that I tried that looked good out of the box without extra configuration needed. That said, multi-monitor with different resolutions is still trash. I connected my laptop up to a 1440p monitor the other day and it didn’t support the different resolutions well. Kind of a shame that it’s been so long and this basic usability feature isn’t standard across DEs.
@joekamprad
That guy is definitely not canadian. You picked a french smiley.
I don’t really like LXQt. LXQt feels rather incomplete
in a way is complete and not, like you can add new users it has a file manager and editor and note, is not perfect… Lxqt is born because lxde reached on one point the top and other qt based desktop was almost died, they reanimated. is it purfect? no but is lighter then xfce currently… but most likely desktop maintainers as lxde/lxqt and xfce lacks of man force thats also reason xfce develop schedule is changed and lxde to lxqt…
I like LxQT but unfortunately it doesn’t look that good on 4K out of the box. 1080p or lower though, it looks great and suits me fine. I found it to be my replacement for xfce4.
I use Gnome. I really the design consistency. I tried KDE and while its customization is absolute stellar, to me the user experience is an absolute mess. Gnome is not perfect, I wish it had a global menu, their gnome tweaks program window is buggy, and I wish I had the option to access minimized windows on the top bar instead of going to overview (I don’t use a dock, kinda trying to not let my UI look similar to macOS). But their UI and design is consistent and tasteful throughout, their menus and placement are easy to understand and not confusing as you’d expect it, and overall I’m happy with it.
I’ve not uses a tiling wm before so I can’t say anything about them. One day maybe, when I’m itching for something new.
Openbox with a basic tint2 panel, rofi and a static root menu - plus a lot hotkeys for navigation and most used apps.
with Gnome you can try this
it good intro into WM .
Switching to kwin is an option if you want to use lxqt in a hidpi scenario.
I already have it installed. I don’t use it often at all because I’m barely in a situation when I need multiple windows open but but when I do it’s really nice to have. Still a tad bit buggy, some windows may not tile properly if you already have a lot of windows open, I don’t think that’s an issue with an actual wm.
strange i use it on my Gnome second machine ( mac mini ) . it work fine
On gaming PC:
DE: Xfce (MX Linux)
Reason: As Xfce from my research seemed to be a DE that uses less resources which is important when gaming. Also, I was curious why MX is number one on distrowatch, so thought I’d install it to find out.
Old gaming laptop:
DE: Budgie (Solus)
Why: Wanted to try budgie/solus
Sister’s old laptop:
DE: Pantheon (Elementary OS)
Why: Thought she’d like the the elementary UI/UX (she’s an Apple/Mac person)
Sister’s other old laptop:
DE: Cinnamon (Endeavour OS)
Why: Endeavour OS the first linux distro that really appealed to me when first started researching about Linux. So knew it had to be the first Linux system I installed - So decided to install it onto my sister’s purple HP Notebook
I guess it’s just me then. Oh well, it’s not that big of a deal for me at the moment and it doesn’t happen all the time either so my concern for getting that sorted out is low. More concerned about getting my bluetooth to work and San Francisco font installed
