What is Ricing?

I just learn about the ricing and blimmin’ term from this forum

“Ricing” is derived from what is now slight antiquated americanisms around car culture in the 90’s-00’s.

Basically customizing a vehicle outside of muscle-car norms was aligned with a perception of ‘asian’ or ‘japanese’. Think a honda civic with post-market parts. Think “Tokyo Drift” before that kind of culture was popular enough to warrant a hollywood movie. After-market customization was ‘asian’, and asians like rice, so ‘ricing’.

The term was initially used for cars.

( At this point I will leave it up to the reader what kind of other associations and norms - especially over time - might have given rise to the use of that term in certain circles .. like technology in particular. )

Eventually the phrase was transferred and divorced from its original meaning.

In the ‘linux’ and related fields of social media it might seem like ‘ricing’ is a totally unique term. But it is not. Just an old, arguably racist, idiom for customizing.

It was never racist, it was about the cars and you can’t be racist to cars. It was derogatory though. And then over here in the UK, ricing your car became a popular hobby.

This is an absurdly silly take.

So … like … calling something a ‘jew car’ cant be racist for the same reasons?

Have you ever heard of a “Paddy Wagon”?

Derogatory in what way?
Maybe based on race?
Thats a lot of mental gymnastics to just call it something else.

“Jew car” said in a proper context is probably racist, but ricing never was.

Based on the fact they were often little, low performance cars

Ok, keep using words the wrong way while defining them exactly in a fashion that reinforces what I have already said.

And by the way were you there?

Because if you werent then you cannot know.

And if you were and you are still trying to defend it as something else .. you were simply one of the privileged bros who probably said the same thing about casually using ‘gay’ in a … derogatory … way.

“So feckin gay cringe bro.”

This thread is taking a jolly gay turn. :innocent:

I never was into ricing my car, but my friends and family were and I’ll say it again, the term ricing was never racist.

And the back-formation that it was seems like people looking for something to be guilty about. There is plenty to be guilty about without adding fake guilt on to it Get heated up about something that matters and maybe you’ll make an actual difference.

Nah in reality this is modern (put neo in here if you like) attempt at the opposite.

Call it whatever you like.

Man this revisionism is so insane.

Like .. you can try to claim you thought it was not racist. That somehow you did not think of it at the time. Though I highly suspect you very well did. Most folks engaging in those things in the 90’s .. like Pocahontas costumes and the like, generally didnt do it ‘hatefully’ but that did not make them less racist. In any case your personal perspective is not universal.

The fact is this is analogous to “currying” your car (or your OS) if things had been only slightly different.

Maybe by switching one word for another this can become more apparent by removing the comfort of an already entrenched term .

Now even fancy dress is racist. You’ve descended so far into the realm of farce, that I’m leaving you to it.

You cannot engage with the history of car ricing in the 90’s as if you know about it and then when someone highlights the real history of the term call it a descent to farce.
.. Unless I guess if you want to look absolutely foolish.

This forum used to be fun however certain people need the feel good about themselves so they berate everyone else. I remember a time When one could come here feeling kinda down and leave feeling up. Now if you dare have a different OPINION someone needs to CRUCIFY you for it. Best thing to do with some is just ignore them.

Yeah and wikipedia is filled with left-wing bias. (hard /s)

I remember a time when the internet was a place of nerds and facts.

Until my post not a single thing here lined up the origination of the term.
Looking back just one mentioned cars.
But without context.
Why were cars a thing?
Why rice?
I explained it above.

Yall can try real hard but so long as I am alive so will real history be.

Hmmm, I should’ve just read without writing anything here. I feels bad now.

Note: I’m asian, I eat rice everyday. I don’t feels offended with the word ricing.

It may be worth highlighting the fact that originally I said ‘arguably’ at the very end of an otherwise rather neutral set of text.

The fact that some folks seemed to come out in order to either defend their prior use of the term or to just … offer their own additional racism .. may be itself telling.

In case it is necessary .. I do not believe that every person using the term is racist. Why do I even need to type this? I gave a historical timeline of the term that was missing.

And doing so knowing that places like these are overwhelmingly saturated with the likes that will then take their own time to bother me?

Facts is facts yall.

I hope it was helpful to someone else out there.

And yall racists, you know who you are, can meet me in valhalla .. oh wait, you wont, because you have no honor. Ah, sad pikachu face. :face_with_steam_from_nose:

PS.

Because just about every time something like this happens, and it gets rightfully taken down, and then revisionists get to again pretend like these things never happened … heres the very next response to my last post;

Imgur

Very not racist at all…
