What is Ricing?

You will need most of the apps i mentioned in my previous post for that, that will give you something pretty close to Hyprland (a lot of Hyprland setups actually just use these apps) but i don’t think there is a guide for it.

Krohnkite for tiling, Pywal/Material for theme switch, Panel Colorizer for the tray/docks, kvantum for the windows, the rest is up to your taste

No, over here at least it always applied to the cars.“Rice Burner” because it started in Japan, It was a bit of a derogatory term but not racist as you can’t be racist to cars. Then as the hobby caught on, it just became ricing.

It seems you want your KDE Desktop looks like this?

You only need 2 extensions

  1. Panel-Colorizer as @perletero mentioned
  2. Kronkite as @perletero mentioned.

I have posted a few settings for Plasma Colorizer here :backhand_index_pointing_down:

Take your time. Read the manuals. Ask questions if you have any.

I have no idea what the Gnome launcher is but,
if you right click on your Start icon and on Alternatives you will have a couple choices of launcher, one being Kickerdash which is a full screen app drawer a bit like the screenshot above (can’t remember the keybind to open it, F2 maybe ?).

Plasma Drawer is probably a better choice, easier to personalize, better looking and more convenient to use.

You can also use Krunner, with Alt+Space, really convenient, lots of functionalities, really powerful with it’s addons, my favourite on KDE.

And then you can always use Rofi, which can give you a lot of convenient launcher menus like this :

The downside being that you will have to configure it yourself (not that complicated, plus a lots of premade config are available on the web)

So again, no idea what the Gnome counterpart is but you should be able to get something pretty similar. (again, Plasma Drawer is probably the best solution)

Edit: Can’t read either, @MyNameIsRichard had the correct answer

Thanks, I will try to find the best solution for me. I like aesthetic and want really eye catchy:)

Btw most of the apps which you posted above are not in extra repo. Are they safe to use?

They are all in AUR
Take a look at luis github

I am not a deep ricer, but I am very passionate about customising my system. It is what brought me to Linux. I used to be more heavily into themes, but I mostly use KDE defaults now, as I like to see small changes they make, e.g. the addition of an actual dolphin to the dolphin icon. I have time added to my Firefox. No time on toolbar. Toolbar set to display above windows and to fit to content. I used to have time on toolbar with it set to display above video games, but I stopped when I started playing ancient video games, as they don’t take focus from my mouse, so I’d end up clicking the toolbar unintentionally.

Post your results when you figure out what you want to do. I remember there is something that looks like Hyprland for KDE, but I don’t remember the name. I used it for a while, then got bored. I am more of a minimalist, as you may see.

Hello,

On the Unixporn subreddit, people post screen capture of their desktop and sometimes they share their configuration files in the comments, it could be a good way to learn.
.

There also a unixporn on lemmy in case that’s your bag.

There’s a Unixporn on Discord as well.

For me ricing is just setting it up to not only look nice but strip out anything unneeded, basically look good with minimal bloat

I love the look of the first boot of my new Arch installs. A black screen with a blinking cursor asking for my login credential. Minimal bloat :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

Then I start bloating it up (or down)

Not bloat as far as im concerned if it makes it a better experience, visual can be a big game changer for most.

You are right. I’m not the enemy of “eye candies”. I am not that good to make beautiful desktops either, unfortunately. I try keeping it minimal, functional (for my needs) and somewhat aesthetically pleasing.

Best way to keep it, in the end the PC is just a tool and functionality always comes first
