Any examples of a,“New Activity”? I have no idea what they are.
Maybe some ideas here:
You know what a Desktop is, right? with your settings and environment - multiple desktops can organise your desktop…
But ‘Activities’ is a more task oriented flow than that, so you can have independent desktop customisation - it’s almost like you log out from one desktop and log in to another.
So you can have one with a colourschmee, wallpaper, widgets, layout… maybe tiled, for a coding workflow then another for a general browsing workflow.
Activities also remember what applications are open. They work alongside virtual desktops but are more ‘contextualised’ or ‘self contained’.
This is going into the Plasma Tips & Tricks thread. Thanks
The difference between Virtual Desktops and Activities. This is a couple of years old (so Plasma 5.X.X), but it should still apply.
That’s nice - just don’t go crazy, if you apply a Global theme it messes up all activities - so wallpaper’s good, and my favourite is colourscheme, My alternate activity is creamy/light coloured which works well as a contrast to my dimmer/greyer comfort zone… then you have ‘activities’ options in the menu to pin/unpin various things.
You can also pin a window across activities, so play music and have it follow you.
Activities is something that should of been incorporated into virtual desktops long ago.
Activities are more advanced than virtual desktops. In my case I use them to switch quickly between standard desktop, gaming, and video recording.
My video recording and gaming activities have their own desktop backgrounds, and also the specific apps in Favourites that use in each one.
I did a video about 2 years back trying to show the differences between virtual desktops vs virtual activities. See https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wq-7KEeH7_U.
If I recall, there’s an ongoing discussion about merging Activities with Virtual Desktops so that there’s less confusion, but not progressed for a while. The kickback on discussing deprecating Activities was significant.
So can I have an auto-start application boot in a certain activity? I mean it still auto-starts, but shows only if I choose that specific activity. Half the time I close Steam when computer boots up. Also can I specify which activity loads when booting computer, or is it the last one used that loads?
Oh please do not deprecate Activity. It is a very good feature, the issue is that is not documented properly. There ought to be proper tutorials regarding its usage.
In that essence KDE suffers from the same malaise that afflicts almost all of European Tech. Very poor to very bad documentation.
I’m American and can tell you this is worldwide.
This is a comment best seen at The KDE forum.
The team there do respond, and being part of that forum is often quite helpful because - well, you know what developers are like ![]()
Many of them are really good, but they do sometimes go off on tangents with stuff that’s not remotely useful or interesting.
