Paul Williams originally wrote āWeāve only just begunā as background music for a commercial. It was for a home loan division of a large bank in Los Angeles. The advertising campaign was for first time home owners, hence the weāve only just begun.
He got so much positive reaction from the commercial, he added verses, etc to make it a published song. Obviously, he is a much better song writer than a singer. So eventually the song was presented to the Carpenters. Richard Carpenter revised the arrangement, etc, and Karen sang the lead.
āI found her diary underneath a tree, and started reading about me.ā
Is it just me, or does that sound kind of creepy?

As for the song title, Urban Legend has it that the verse was originally āIn the Garden of Edenā. By the time they got several takes in, the lead singer was just a tad high. When the producers heard the slurred version for some reason they liked it better. So they changed the verse and re-recorded it later when the group was little more lucid.
