Still counting…

if you like to go down the rabbit hole like I do, when American music was analog with humans that played instruments it blows my mind at their efficiency. I L-O-V-E listening to 30-50’s music from popular to swing to jumpin jive.

If yo do this enough you begin to see a very distinct pattern: the music plays for quite a long time without the singer. It’s as if the bandleader, the clarinetist, the strings, the drummer, the bassist, and assorted woodwinds and brass were every bit as important as the singer and the wanted you know that in this era. What ba**s.

In this great 30’s song the singer comes in about the 1:30 mark and is relegated as a mere footnote on the record label. you will see that in swing and jumpin jive from peggy lee to benny goodman records (and joe jackson’s jazz stuff) etc.
