Itās a lovely symphony, but that performance is not Empfindsamkeit enough, in my opinion. It needs more Sturm, and could use a bit of Drang, tooā¦
I propose the following recording:
Much better.
When it comes to Haydn, and his contemporaries, their hyper-galant style can sound a bit dead if performed by large philharmonic-style orchestras. It was written with small ensembles in mind, where each player has an opportunity to have a virtuosic moment. This type of music should be performed in a very manic-depressive way, with moodswings bigger and more frequent than a Karen going through a menopause with no manager to speak toā¦
And I donāt necessarily mean a super fast tempo, I actually prefer a slower tempo. It just needs those characteristic haydnesque moodswings and his fantastic sense of humour: one moment everything is just peachy, youāre full of enthusiasm, four bars later, itās liTtEraLlY the apocalypse, four bars later, youāre perfectly fine again, happy and gay, frolicking on a sunny meadow under a rainbow, only to have all your dreams crushed in the next four barsā¦
Actually, thatās a really good analogy. The death of J.S. Bach in 1750 can be seen as the beginning of the menopause of music.
Thanks! Will have a listen. Some Sturm und Drang am Sonntag - Whatās not to like?
Thanks for the colourful description; I agree this recording is so much better.
And I think I understand what youāre trying to say, but as my wife lost her job and 10 years of her life because of the menopause, the analogy isnāt all that appealing to me. Sorry.
I do like Haydn, though.
I really must have a look at IMSLP for some piano sheet music of his music - hopefully he wrote some keyboard works that are within my reach.
My favourite Haydn keyboard sonata also happens to be one of the easier ones:
I played this (quite badly) as a kid. Fond memories!
Given enough patience, Iām pretty sure this is within anyoneās reach, assuming perfectionism does not stand in the way.
I gave up on perfection some years ago.
Quite liberating.
Thanks! Sounds fun to play.
Will have a look.
(Impressive instrument in the video; the bass is quite something.)
That is the sort of clavichord Haydn played. It is a very weak instrument, but also very expressive. It was the only keyboard instrument on which controllable vibrato is possible. For best experience, it should be listened at very, very low volume, like a whisper.
If you want a louder sound, and still quite authentic for Haydn, a harpsichord is very nice, though lacking subtlety and a certain⦠Empfindsamkeit () of a clavichord:
Also, for nationalistic reasons, the harpsichord lost popularity in post-Bach Germanic landsā¦
This is what I listen to when Iām doing some work that doesnāt occupy my brain too much.
Though not for longer than half an hour.
Depeche Mode - Just canāt get enough, is an absolute BANGER. 80s is the best era of music hands down.
Nice! The man wrote a lot of music⦠Thanks for some new avenue to explore.
