What are ipw2100-fw and ipw2200-fw for?

I came across them when I checked my system for nonfree software packages. As I understand it, they’re driver packages for old Intel hardware and were only compatible with the 2.6.x kernels, but have since been integrated into the main kernel.

Why are they installed by default on some distros (including Endeavour) but not on others?

Both firmware packages are in [core] which is why they’re installed by default.
