What application have you recently discovered?

From the website:

Five formats, and it tells you which to pick

  • Markdown - For version control, or moving into another tool.
  • EPUB - For beta readers on e-readers and phones, where the text has to reflow.
  • PDF - For when the layout must not move.
  • Word - For anyone who will leave comments or track changes.
  • RTF - For when you don’t know what they use.

Hammer explains each one at the moment you are choosing, instead of leaving you to guess from a row of file extensions.

AND

Now the part that matters in ten years

Transparent data

Open the folder and it makes sense

Not a database, not a proprietary bundle. Open the project folder with Hammer shut and the shape of your book is already there: a file per scene, named the way you named it. Search it, back it up, mail it to yourself. Reading your own work should never require this program, or a computer science degree.

Thanks for sharing this!!! Will test it out!

PS: Obviously, writing apps are easier to build than most apps. But, it is also obvious that many of these new apps are either vibe-coded or LLM-assisted. This is the same for art-based apps as well. It’s obvious.

So, I’m grateful these apps exist, but I’m not naive to think they are fully ethical in their creation, even if they are ethical in their goals.

It’s one of those “Does the ends justify the means?” things.

One thing for sure is that creatives in different fields, for the most part, completely disregard how their use of “AI” affects another field of creatives. :face_with_peeking_eye:

Damn. Hammer does the same thing that novelWriter does in terms of importing projects. It either assumes you are just starting out or that you have your entire book/all your chapters in one file. So there is no importing a folder of files. You have to put everything into one file first, then import that one file.

Otherwise, looking through the example novel, Hammer is very polished and suitable for novel writing on both desktop and mobile. It’s like Manuskript, but better looking.
Great app. :star::star::star::star::star:

Don’t want to crush the party or so, but maybe we need a “My personal editor/writer of choice” topic?

Done. Will still use this thread for adding apps regardless, but the new thread can be used for discussing them in detail, talking about best practices, etc.

What we need is a topic where people can vote for their favorite editor/writer of choice and give comments. It has been a long time since we had a flame war. Lets goo…

The source code is gone, not sure what is GPL-3.0. The maintainer now just disabled issues from their repo, probably yet another AI slopware, only for testing.

https://github.com/eolix/photosuite#open-source-used-here but the project itself is now proprietary

Not sure why you say it’s now proprietary. I can see that the recent update is set to audit and everything is gone if you don’t know how to find it, but I do.

Here: https://github.com/Alex9001/photosuite/tree/refs/heads/fix/cross-platform-appimage-releases

Also, even if they go proprietary with it, what they did in the open-source space cannot be revoked, so once you download the latest build and or source code, it is open-source “forever”.

Anyway, I’m guessing the audit is standard, though I’ve never seen it before. Not gonna research it right now because I don’t care and actually forgot to use it in place of GIMP - old habits. :man_shrugging:

Didn’t see the audit notice, perhaps they updated the readme just after I commented here. Thanks for the info.

Yep…

I do very much hate the narrative that some people use that because a product is well-known, it means they have some legal recourse against the company if they violate any laws. I hate this narrative because, for the most part, people do not have the resources or finances to take these companies to court, and most of these same people will only come and complain online instead of boycotting the company.

A world of privileged idiots.

All talk and no action = acceptance and compliance

Anyway. Yep, a large amount of this wave of new apps is AI-based in some way. Sadly, we can’t say we are “holier than thou” because the Linux kernel is also AI-assisted. :grimacing:

PeerSeek - Search PeerTube Videos Across the Fediverse

It lets you subscribe to channels without signing up - you just need to ensure your browser doesn’t clear the site’s cookie by adding an exception (assuming you set your browser to automatically clear cookies).

Of course, if you already have a Fediverse account, you don’t need this. That is, unless you would like to add an extra layer of privacy by not “officially” following a channel, keeping the channels separate from your Fediverse account.

For Smartphones. vela Google Maps without Google

Phanpy: Minimalistic opinionated Mastodon web client.

For mastodon users, i love it on my 27" Dell!

Very pretty, only an app image available, but very pretty

This appeared on the reddit group:

Looks very well done, I installed will play with it tomorrow.

Don’t mind these quick shell “DEs”. Just want one that gives me long window buttons like the icon and text task manager in KDE, or the Cinnamon and Xfce equivalents. Like to see exactly what I’m clicking on without having to guess, or click twice for grouped window buttons. I’m old-fashioned when it comes to this.

Will give this a spin as well all the same.

That looks promising. Curious to see where it goes.

Running in a window on MangoWM, it is a bit W11.
