Weird window flickering

Hi there,

I have an issue that could be best described as windows having flashing transparency with jagged edges.
This happens since install and I thought it’d be just the kernel or something else that would get fixed later. But since my install was in January I thought, I’d bring it up here.

It’s really hard to properly explain, so please have a look at these pictures (ignore the black bars, I redacted my name there):

1.Disable Adaptive Sync (VRR)

Adaptive Sync is the most common culprit for flickering in games and applications on AMD GPUs.

  • Go to System Settings > Display and Monitor > Display Configuration.
  • Look for Adaptive Sync and toggle it Off. Alternatively, drop your monitor refresh rate to 120 Hz if you wish to keep it enabled.
  1. Press Alt + Shift + F12 to temporarily disable the compositor. If the flickering stops, go to System Settings > Desktop Effects and disable Blur or Background Contrast.

I checked disabling the compositor and it didnt help.

But when I reduced the refreshrate to 60Hz (either 165 or 60 on my laptop) it stopped flickering!

Of course I will keep an eye on it, but it seems fixed so far :slight_smile:

Unfortunately the flickering returned today, even with 60Hz and VRR off :frowning:

I tried to record it with Spectacle, but it didn’t show up in the recording :thinking:

A problem with the cable or monitor?

It the internal monitor of my Framework 16 laptop :confused:

Check it in X11 session or with a new user or in a live system.

Wayland was causing the flickering I was having. After I removed it it stopped.

It’s hard to test on X11, as it breaks all the scaling and the touchpad gestures for workspace switching, which I use all the time. (This is actually the reason why I won’t go back to X11, there’s too much nice stuff in Wayland…)
But I gave it a try just now and it seems like it’s not happening in X11.

Next I will try it with a new user, that has no special setup whatsoever. It’s not that easy, because I need the programs to actually exhibit the flashing and I have found no way of triggering it reliably.

I had a similar error (although in color and not in transparent) in a completely new profile. Gotta check a live image next.

Endeavour OS uses X11 for the live image and I didnt manage to switch to Wayland.

Okay, I had the opportunity to boot my OS on the computer of a friend of mine and would you believe it:
No flickering at all.

So to me, it looks like something is wrong with the hardware.

I don’t think it’s the hardware itself. Rather a issue with drivers or something with the specific hardware combination that the software doesn’t like. In that case Wayland probably, as you ruled out the kernel and it works with X11.
Maybe it works with a different DE? Should KDE be to blame? (though I personally doubt that kde is the reason)

It could be a kwin problem, couldn’t it?
I basically need to test something that uses wayland as well and doesn’t break my KDE install.
I wouldn’t want to get used to a tiling compositor, thus there are:
hikari
labwc
mutter
waybox
wayfire
weston
wio
wlmaker
woodland

Only labwc, mutter, wayfire, and weston are in the Arch extra repositories, so maybe I start with one of them?
But I wonder how I can find out how to use a different compositor on my system…

Okay, I tried weston, wayfire and labwc.
Weston and wayfire didnt work out of the box, but labwc did.

And would you believe it:
In labwc, Steam does not flicker.
I basically just start Steam and Discord and with kwin I am experiencing at least a little bit of flickering in the first few minutes.
But in labwc it doesnt flicker.

So I guess, I report a bug to kwin then
