I had fpdma errors before, the sata cables weren’t connected properly. One other symptom of this is low read/write speeds. Try to reconnect cables.
Well what is your sata connection set to , RAID or AHCI , RAID is known to cause issues with linux.

Sorry for the disappearence - christmas happened (by the way, merry christmas for those who celebrate it!).
So, I’ve switched my HDD’s and my SSD’s SATA cables around as Schlaefer suggested and indeed, it seems like the SATA cable was the issue. I’ve been using my system for quite some time now and haven’t encountered any more freezes or IO errors.
I haven’t really solved the problem, just transferred it to my windows partition, but I’ll buy a new SATA cable eventually (and I rarely need windows), so all is good.
Thanks everyone for the help! I feel like the conclusion was a little underwhelming since it was such an easy problem… but that’s life, I guess.
