Website question

Hi all,

I have a question. On my iPhone 13 mini i installed duckduckgo for browsing. Endeavouros forum works nice on it. Yesterday i got my hands on a old Samsung Galaxy A40 model running android 11. I installed duckduckgo on it and tried to access the forum. Sadly i see a message that duckduckgo is not supported by the forum.

Why does it work on ios and not on android?

The forum opens without issue on my Android phone with DDG 5.236.1. Which version are you running on your Galaxy phone?

Most likely old DDG version.

I was using Kiwi browser on my android, their development stopped and good enough, the forum eventually started showing me warning. As Bryan said, tell us your DDG version. You can find that by tapping 3 dot menu → Settings → About (3rd last option) → scroll to the very bottom

Meanwhile, you may want to skim through this

It mentions iOS, but later in thread the specific Chrome and Firefox versions are clarified. I believe DDG is based on Chrome and an older Chrome base might bet he issue.

And finally, I just installed DDG Browser v5.236.1 on Android 15 phone and can open forum without any warning. I do get this warning on Kiwi browser, because as I said its development is stopped and it doesn’t get updates.

If you want me to check, I have an Android 10 device at my home and can check DDG browser there, but you’ll have to wait till I’m home

Will check it out when i am back home.

The latest DDG version works on Android 8 and up.

Hmm, then check the security settings. I installed DDG after your question to check and it worked out of the box.

Same as my iphone device, for some reason the Samsung Galaxy A40 does not work with this site. It does work with the google chrome browser but i prefer duckduckgo

Perhaps a stupid question, but did you install it from the Samsung store or the Google play store? In the past Ihad issues with apps from an older version samsung store.

Google play, so i am really out of ideas. Is it possible the site checks for which android version is running prehaps ?

Then I’m out of options. I also just checked it on an older phone running Android 12 and it works.
Android 11 should still be accepted, but perhaps @flyingcakes can clarify more later with Android 10.

I really don’t understand why the A40 has this issue with Android 11 installed.

Do you have something like javascript blocked?
You may encounter such a message when certain software/libraries/plugins are blocked, even on supported browsers.

Not that i am aware off. It’s a clean android 11 install from samsung.

It may have something to do with it being Android 11, which was end-of-life February 2024. Android is at 15 currently.

Nope, duckduckgo supports android 8 and higher.

If you are not averse to Google proprietary technology, we can investigate a bit further.

Duckduckgo uses Android’s system webview, which if is at an old version, will cause such issues irrespective of DDG version.

Assuming you have the Android installation from Samsung (i.e. you didn’t root & flash a ROM), try updating Google Chrome and Android System Webview via Play Store.

(open these on your phone)

Edit: the point of updating google chrome is that on older android versions (I believe before version 10) webview is supplied by chrome. But I’m not sure what Samsung uses, so just to rule it out, I’ve suggested updating chrome too. In case samsung has its own webview implementation, most likely they are not updating it anymore so you have an older webview causing this issue.

My Samsung Tablet S9Fe+ (Android 15) has “Android System WebView 136.0.7103.125”. Yours might have an older version.
