Wayland using 15% GPU at idle?

Hi,

Since the last update Wayland is using 15-25% of my GPU at any given moment.

I have a RTX 5080 with 16GB of vram so 15-25% with it NEVER going below 15% seems rather excessive.

If it is not a bug I need to change my desktop immediately and am looking for a recommendation for something tweak/customizable and light so as not to use 15% of my GP which seems right ridiculous actually.

THIS MUST be a BUG?

As usual thank you for all your comments and help, I truly appreciate it.

Edit: I was mistaken–it was pegged 15%-17% for 25 minutes and JUST after I pressed post on this thread it went to 8% briefly and then it bounced from 8-15% for about 30 seconds and now it is pegged at 15% once more. it goes from 15% -25% but more accurate at the moment it is bouncing from 14%-19%.

I am connected to a VPN with split tunneling and I have 1 browser window, 1 terminal windows and 1 dolphin window open.

I am not going to do it cause I don’t wanna have to reboot but if I open a dozen browser windows will it be at 75% GPU? WTF?

I haven’t changed anything, exceprt adding this to my fastfecth config:
Weather: Ottawa +0°C (-4°C) :sun_behind_cloud: Partly cloudy ←13km/h 64% 18:59:12-0500

it only takes about 3-5 seconds to load and it can’t be using the GPU, can it? I mean it makes no sense to me for this to me using 10-% or more of my GPU.

I just did the most recent updates yesterday or maybe it was Thursday.

Previous to that the GPU never went over 2-5% when not playing a game of encoding a video or something like that.

The below picture will be deleted after 1 day. Let me know if I need to upload it once more.

The second one might last longer.

They’re free services so…

Could you post your hardware. You can post the url.

Hi Rick and tyvm.

I shutdown the PC last night.

I check today and the gpu is sitting between 0-7% usage: which is about normal AFAIK from checking intermittently.

Here is the inxi output URL: https://0x0.st/PjhU.txt

Without it acting up I am unsure what troubleshooting we can do?

Thanks a bunch.

Nice hardware. What DDR5 memory are you using? What speed is it? It’s obvious something was stuck consuming resources. Have you used glances or B top? Maybe it helps see more going on.

A couple hours later and the GPU is STILL running between 0-7% or so…

I am unsure what that was all about last night.

I’ll close this and try to remember to get some more info while the issue is happening next time.

I did run nvtop but all it showed was plasma using 15-18% of my GPU and very, very few other apps using 0-1% or so randomly. Same with the system monitor only it didn’t even show that it was plasma using the 15% GPU…just that 15% of the GPU was being used.

Thanks for responding.

Hi Again Rick,

It’s Corsair RAM. I wanted GSKILL RIPJAW’s but at the time I had a real hard time getting Gskill that I wanted and Corsair was at the shop I was buying from so…Corsair 5200 it is

I have btop installed but I only thought of using the system monitor and nvtop as it is related to GPU usage; my CPU usage was hovering around 1-6 % the whole time this was happening.

Glances looks like a little much for my purposes: perhaps if there was a plugin for pfsense I could run it there and a client on the PC’s I do want to monitor? BUT, I won’t put it on my servers, at last not yet.
I MIGHT put it on a LINUX file server I will have in the future though. As long as I can just install a small client on each of my Linux PC’s that would make monitoring quick and easy I believe.

THANKS for mentioning it.

1 thing I did not mention and probably should have is that earlier in the evening I re-encoded a video using avidemux but that was completed and done like 2-3 hours before I noticed this GPU usage thing so I do not think they are related?

AVIDEMUX is an appimage on my system-not a package install.

I cannot remember when I last updated Avidemux as it just keeps working.

I’m not a fan of app images.

Me neither but I LIKE AVIDEMUX and it comes in flatpack or appimage=lesser of 2 evils :-1:

I also run appimages for HeroicGamesLauncher, and ProtonUP-Qt

Because I cannot find packages for them and I like those apps.

This is in the official repos.

[ricklinux@rick-systemproductname ~]$ pacman -Ss avidemux
extra/avidemux-cli 2.8.1-9
Graphical tool to edit video (filter/re-encode/split)
extra/avidemux-qt 2.8.1-9
Graphical tool to edit video (filter/re-encode/split) - Qt GUI

Edit:

heroic-games-launcher is in the AUR
protonup-qt is also in the AUR

Really, I am sure I tried the AUR…but let me go check again.

Arguably, I don’t use Heroic games launcher. I used it to get an Epic game downloaded and installed then imported it into Steam to run over proton-that’s worked fine. I uninstalled the game though.

oh and I remember why I did the appimages, I tried all the AUR installs, and none of them worked properly, avidemux installed but it’s interface was all buggy, it worked but it was “uncomfortable” to use. I forget the exact work around but it was a pita for me. The appimage worked flawlessly as has since.

With heroic it wouldn’t even launch.

Proton-QT I cannot remember why I used an appimage–maybe the link was right there on the webpage or something and I assumed no package available? Sounds like me

I’ll try them once more but I ain’t holding my breath on them if they need all kinds of messing around to get them to work they should be in the AUR to begin with is my honest opinion but, it is what it is.

If I could I’d use only the apps that was in the endeavour and arch main repos..again, is what it is.

All of this is WAY better than where I came from Rick.

Cheers!

John

F.Y.I - the package installed fine. However, UBISOFT changed their installer so what I did last time, import the game into steam and use proton to run it) is not working this time AND the heroic launcher fails to update the UPlay Launcher to UbiSoft Connect launcher. SO, I downloaded it from the Ubisoft website and installed it into the Avatar:Pandora games prefix and it installed fine, it opens fine also but, all I see is a window frame with a blank white space in the middle. I KNOW it is open and something is working because if I click the upper right corner in the white space it closes the app-I actually got asked if I wanted to exit the app or minimize to the tray so the APP is open. If I move the mouse around the white space I can see it change to the LINK symbol when I move/hover over them.

Anyhoo, I did a quick search for Avatar-Pandora on steam and it is NOW available on STEAM and less than half the price I aid for it when it first came out-Ubisoft had a needle in their a$$ about STEAM at the time so they went ahead and released it on Epic first and I believe THAT was the last time they’ll make THAT mistake–sales were not nearly as god as those that release on UbiSoft Connect and Steam.

AND finally, anyhoo again, I removed heroic cause I do not need it anymore thank god and it only cost me $25.00 - cheap and well worth it to rid myself of another aggravation.

Hey, I got it installed and it installed perfectly.
However the AV1 decoder is either missing or corrupted as it does not play and old Episode of Third Rock from the SUN but the app image one displays, plays and cuts, decodes, re-encodes it with zero issues.

Probably something is missing from the build?
Not sure.
The appimage also has the non-free NVIDIA encoders in it where the package does not.
—maybe that’s on me?
-------Re-install NVIDIA driver or something?

All I know for sure is the package does not do what the appimage does do.
At least for now.

I just tested with a different video and it’s the same thing only the packaged version of avidemux crash the first time I dragged and dropped on it…The second time was exactly like the small little first video I tried. I can move the window around on top of other windows and the window frame is perfect, everything on the fame seems to work fine, resizing, all the menus, but in the middle it’s transparent—I can see all my other windows behind it.

This one played fine in the appimage avidemux as did the next but both did not play video in the packaged version, menus, window frames, resizing, min/max=all working but where the video should be it is transparent.

I am going to unsniatll the packaged one.

THANK you very much I got rid of 2 appimages and that’s awesome.
Hopefully, avidemux will start to work after a couple more releases.
and if not it is what it is-the appimage works fine.
