After a year I finally, at login, hit “Wayland Experimental”**.
(**note to Endeavour devs—that word is smart and necessary, thank you!)
Eh. Like being in a junkyard. my theme fell off and it went black. No Plank. Ran plank in terminal and it literally said "Wayland can’t run Plank" and I said “what good is Wayland then?”
I did a yay update, and it updated, then just died, the OS crawled into a hole after update. I didn’t even lift a finger.
Later, when I got into good X11 Cinnamon I updated again and it was the same packages like it never updated in Wayland.
Internal Monologue: [I don’t get it. It’s a plot to make the whole world KDE? I hope Strobl figures this out with Budgie.]
But I will stay Endeavour Cinnamon as long as Endeavour Cinnamon stays X11 because I HEART Endeavour Cinnamon.
Direct observation/experience here; please don’t interpret these as registered complaints.
I think the “experimental” label is coming from Cinnamon devs directly, as it’s definitely still an appropriate disclaimer. I feel bad touting it as “fine” in a previous thread without considering the use of X11-only apps and tools. my bad
The latest update’s been a little rough around the edges for me, too. I’ve experienced theme compatibility issues with notifications and panels, and some of my go-to applets haven’t updated yet.
In terms of timing we don’t think we need Wayland support to be fully ready (i.e. to be a better Cinnamon option for most people) before 2026 (Mint 23.x).
If I want to use cinnamon with wayland, my mouse stops working and my keyboard won’t accept anything else than the us-layout. So I give it a try every few weeks, and when it not fits my needs, I logout and use X11 again for next time.
I was running Cinnamon Wayland on an HP laptop and it was working pretty well. I have since loaded CachyOS on it which is KDE. Cinnamon has always been a favorite of mine but I just find KDE to be a better choice all around.
I’ve been using it with very few issues since pretty much the minute GNOME 40 dropped a few years ago. I’m not sure the issues with Cinnamon, but they have a massively smaller team for implementation.
I’m sure once it’s “Mint ready” it’ll be solid and a slam dunk. The wheels on the Cinnamon stick roll at the speed more of Mint cadence than anything else.
