VMware error when updating

When updating i see the following error in the output. It doesn’t seem to have any negative affect on anything but i just wondered if something needs to be added to dracut?

[2024-12-07T12:34:20-0500] [ALPM-SCRIPTLET] Error! vmware-workstation/17.5.2_23775571: Missing the module source directory or the symbolic link pointing to it.

Maybe the old build is haunting…
Deleting ~/.cache/yay should help?

Okay I’ll try that.

Edit: I have deleted the whole folder in cache. Hopefully that is what you meant? Now I’ll have to wait until another update to check the log.

Yes, that’s what I meant.
Is it OK now?

Well I don’t really know unless i see that message when updating. I’m sure you’re probably right.

Edit: I’m not sure if i would have to install a kernel in order to see it?

But can’t you simply install it?
yay -S vmware-workstation

It’s already installed. I only saw that error message when updating and there was a newer kernel also which triggers all the dracut stuff.

Ok, it could be the kernel change only causing the message. If all works then no problem.

This is where i see it when starting the update. It then proceeds to complete the updates and kernel install with all the dracut stuff and btrfs snapshots etc. I just wondered why it shows this messaging and whether it has something to do with dracut needing vmware added? I’m not very savy on this stuff. I didn’t post it all as it’s pretty long.

Edit: I notice it’s two versions of vmware. I have version 17.6.1 installed so these are two older versions in the error message. So maybe it is the cache?

Those messages seem to be from old vmware-workstation versions, so shouldn’t cause any problem.
Not sure where they are but I’d search under /usr or /usr/src recursively.
Or uninstall vmware-workstation, reboot, and then reinstall it.

I’ll see if the messages show up again when some major updates happen like another kernel. Hopefully removing the yay cache worked.

Actually I don’t think removing yay cache helps. But doesn’t hurt either.

I’m getting the same messaging on my Nvidia desktop with both vmware and nvidia. It’s not causing any issues but I was just trying to figure out where the error reporting is derived from? Is related to btrfs snapshots maybe then? I have the same set up on both desktops with btrfs. One being amdgpu and the other nvidia.

So on the Nvidia desktop i get the same error type messaging when updating.

Then it runs everything to update without issue.
