VLC crashes when opening

Been a while since I updated. This is new, it used to open the same file just fine. It is an .mkv file.

Maybe this topic can help.

Thanks but i already have vlc-plugins-all installed.

If you open VLC without trying to play any media, does it still crash?

Does it consistently crash for other file types?

Yes, it appears so. MKV, MP4, VOB, etc even if the file inside of the container like mkv is different. (mp4/h264/265 etc)

I’m not too sure but i wonder if it has to do with a KDE update, as my cpu cycles are sitting at >10% since the most recent upgrade.

vlc stopped working for me about a year ago. Functions like Effects and Filters just stopped working. They became grayed out. I still use it to convert videos to play on my head unit in my truck, but that s about it. MPV is my go to computer app now.

all off my other players work fine, which includes MPV, and the files worked before so its not the files themselves.

Provided you haven’t done any significant customisation, might you try removing the existing configs and cache so it can recreate them fresh?

These are the locations I can spot:

~/.config/vlc
~/.local/share/vlc

deleted both, no luck. I’ve noticed under audio devices, its empty. Also, video works, but only when XVideo Output (XCB) is selected under Video>Output Modules. There is obviously no sound, and running XVideo or the X11 output mode is strange considering im running wayland

Edit: scratch that, the audio device are back, i had reset the config using a terminal command.

Does any of this matter? I found it on the Info Center page for Vulkan:

WARNING: [../mesa-25.2.7/src/amd/vulkan/radv_physical_device.c:2160] Code 0 : Could not get the kernel driver version for device /dev/dri/renderD128: Invalid argument (VK_ERROR_INCOMPATIBLE_DRIVER)
ERROR: [Loader Message] Code 0 : setup_loader_term_phys_devs: Failed to detect any valid GPUs in the current config
ERROR at /usr/src/debug/vulkan-tools/Vulkan-Tools/vulkaninfo/./vulkaninfo.h:247:vkEnumeratePhysicalDevices failed with ERROR_INITIALIZATION_FAILED

and under OpenGL: this sticks out at the top. Seems important, as this is what VLC states when launched from terminal when i use any other Output Module other than Xvideo or X11 outputs.

failed to get driver name for fd 4
failed to get driver name for fd 5
glx: failed to create dri3 screen
failed to load driver: radeonsi

Just to cross link this issue, I’ve just recently thought it may be related to this other new issue I have, which I figured was related to KDE and plasmashell, but perhaps its my graphics drivers. Something may have borked during the update process.

Do you have vlc-plugins-extra installed?

I don t even have vlc installed anymore. Mpv works for me.

I am going to close this topic, Thanks everyone for the help. It appears I have a borked pc after updating, as a fresh install does not have any of the issues I have been experiencing, of which there are too many to list. Some of the main ones are:

plasmashell using 10% (or more if wallpaper/background is animated, as far as 40-65% on a 16 core cpu)

vlc unable to produce video except via XVideo output module

vlc unable to produce any sound

games stuttering at random and unusual intervals despite working

pc fans speeding up and slowing down at different and unusual times

strange tearing on certain windows

etc.

A few other issues also cropped up, such as usb drives randomly disconnecting

drivers showing as installed yet missing, as well as errors from info programs

and processes refusing to quit during shutdown, though this seemed random.

Thanks again for helping me diagnose my computer  I know i type too much.
