Video chat app for Linux

I m wondering what the preferred video chat app you all use.

Jitsi (jitsi-meet-desktop) is probably my preferred.

I use Jitsi for bigger groups and organised meetings, running off a self-managed server. This is comparable to Zoom. No desktop app is really needed, you can connect via browser.

But for more casual video chat, like with family and friends, Signal (signal-desktop).

zoom simple b/c I have a work acct.
prefer Jitsi though over all foss video chats.

I will not use skype or google meets on principle. webex either.

At least this can be used in the web-browser, which at least keeps it sand-boxed. Their apps (desktop and mobile) have been fraught with security vulnerabilities so I can’t in good conscious recommend it if the intention is to install it as an app.

I only use the standalone zoom app with the xdg launch–not the web browser…did not know the other info—will research. and thanks.

So, if I need to do a session, and the other end is using, say, zoom, and I have Jitsi, will there be any compatibility issues?

Yes. You have to use the same system.

I don’t think it works that way, does it?

As others have mentioned no .. that does not work.

You cannot ‘join’ a jitsi chat using zoom or vice-versa.

But one of the reasons I like jitsi is that it doesnt require the other users to install it .. they can just open a link you send them in their browser.

So in that way you can, easily, communicate using jitsi with your zoom contacts. Just not using zoom.

I remember using team viewer, years ago, when I was a windows monkey. I still have an account with them now that I think about it…anyway, I will try out jitsi. Thanks everyone

I use Zoom since I already have installed and I can host a meeting.

I once used Jitsi a few years ago, but we had problems with it (can’t remember which, I think it was with more than 2 participants).

So then I set up my Nextcloud and we use Nextcloud’s “Talk” for videochats. It also has an “invite” mode where you can hand out a link for people to participate without the need to become a Nextcloud user first.

Never had the need to use Zoom or Teams, although some corporate users might.

What is the cost for simple single home server installation?

Software is Open Source, so no cost, but you need an “always-on” server, reachable from the Internet of course, plus some nameserver settings. Installation can be a bit tricky. I have the “AIO” (All-In-One) version running on my Proxmox, behind an Nginx Proxy Manager. Plus I use a domain from my hosting provider, who allows me to do my own nameserver settings (needed for audio/video chats, Fediverse webfinger and such).

And it is of course much, much more than just a talk server, so it could be a little overkill, it depends. I use it mainly for family videochats, document exchange & collaboration, and photo storage, because we live quite far apart. I also use it as my RSS feed aggregator and for the Fediverse (like Mastodon).

Access can be over the web (browser) or using one of their clients, available for many platforms.

Thinking about what I’ve written, using Jitsi might actually be much easier… And maybe the problems of years ago have been solved in the meantime, too…
