Users of Linux, GNU or UNIX

Yesterday afternoon, talking to my brother (who uses Win2s), he asked me how many women use Linux (whether they are programmers, system administrators or simply use Linux to avoid depending on Win-bugs).
I told him several, but he was not very satisfied, so I asked the following question:

Here in Spain there are several women who use it (whatever the distro).
And in your country or town, do you know anyone?

Greetings and enjoy a rainy Saturday.

I know only four people among my family, friends, neighbours, former coworkers, peers, clients, etc. that use Linux.

One is a sysadmin, another is into cybersecurity, and they both only use Linux for work.

The other two use it on their personal devices. One is my brother, but he mostly uses Windows at home and is a cybersecurity expert as well, and the other is a client who uses Linux at home, but Windows at work.

Technically, I know five: my mother. But the computer is dead now, so not really.

PS: If you can edit your post, a poll would be a good idea. If you can’t edit your original post and add a poll, you can instead reply to the thread and build a poll in the reply.

I frankly don’t know any girl/woman in Romania that uses Linux. Then again, I’m terrible with girls, so yeah…

As for females – none.
Most of them are either computer-illiterate or just don’t care as long as the computer works (as you might guess, it means they use the computer’s default OS).

It seems that the mystery of a PC=Win2s has been resolved

My first O.S. was Basic in a Commodore Vic-20 in 1984

You are aware, that the Win2s abbreviation does not work in English or most languages?

And Yes the term “PC” originates form IBM personal computers which for the most part where marketed with windows exclusively since windows-95 came up.
The term only broadened later to address the general concept of a multi functional private computing device.

Yes, but in my language (Spanish) 2s=“dows” or WinBug, Bugs=bicho in spanish. :sonreado:

Regards.

I don’t know any women who use Linux, but then again I don’t know any men who use it either, so I’m not sure how relevant the line of questioning truly is

I’m sure there are plenty of them out there, in all honesty I imagine a lot of the older generation who would have more in common with myself have grown up in an online environment where openly espousing your gender was seen as an invitation for certain men to be incredibly weird about it, so they may keep it under their hats.

As for the kids, I have no idea what they’re up to.

Ah, wasn’t sure what to make of that. I thought it was an unusual reference to Win2k (Windows 2000) initially.

@Miguel1964, as for women I know using a GNU/Linux distro, one, but more if the question was to include non-adults.

If also referring to just use of the Linux kernel or BSD kernel, well include any women using Android (phones, tablets, smart TVs) or Playstation 4/5. I’m guessing that’s not what you’re talking about though.

very valid point. I’m on a first-name basis with a few IT guys between two locations, sometimes three. I always ask about Linux-- I have to. One guy ever ran Ubu at home. Arch scares a couple of them. 99% run Win 11 at home…they all know of Linux but they don’t (except ubu guy) use linux ever.

…I have never met an IT girl, which is interesting.

they don’t even know what it is, generally, just like the grownups. I ask often.

At work our it department use Linux a lot for programming and computer management purposes. And there are a lot of people involved in the it department, many of whom are women.

Edit; my wife uses Linux.

Wouldn’t it just be Win2 since 2 = dos?

Anyways I don’t know females who use Linux although I occasionally like to show off my nerdiness to them with Linux. Thus far they haven’t seemed all that impressed

In english 2=two, in spanish 2=dos (is an games of words)

Regards. :sonreado:
