Updating BIOS on a Lenovo laptop - running into an immediate problem at the first step with innoextract

Well your suggestion was to try a proper install of windows to run the update, which I read as implying Hirens could be the issue.

This is true. And i would have suggested it earlier also but I didn’t. No reason… just didn’t. Some users give up too early… Others go through hoops. Sometimes it’s a learning experience and sometimes it’s a waste of time.

Edit: I have no reason to think it’s a probelm with the Hirens boot disc but then again I don’t know for sure what the issue could be. :person_shrugging:

Well you’ve been working it pretty hard so it got hungry.

Absolutely not. It would just solve your specific issue. I have no reason to believe there’s anything wrong with Hiren’s.

Who knew that having good working conditions could be good for the end product?

(I tried very hard to phrase that such that I don’t break any politics rules, let me know if I am being too cautious or should stop immediately lol)

What we don’t know is it an issue with the specific bios update file. Or is it a UEFI Firmware (Bios) issue on the system. Or something else? :person_shrugging:

@Andrew
I’ll leave you to it since i know installing Windows does take a lot more time than installing eos. You can download a Windows ISO and flash it to a usb easily.

But if you don’t think the issue is the OS, then what would switching to a proper install of Windows do? I don’t get it. Do you maybe mean using Lenovo Advantage or something?

You could do that once Windows is installed instead of using the .exe file in Windows.

Could it be as simple as skipping a version update?

Version of what? BIOS? OS?

It would eliminate user error which is likely in my opinion the cause of why you can’t use hiren’s to accomplish this.

On Windows I would follow whatever is recommended by Lenovo on their website.

Edit: from their website:

So to be clear, is the idea now that I try a proper install of Windows, replacing EOS and not just a usb? Then again, I guess Windows would force itself outside of the usb though

Always some sort of micro-misstep somewhere that you don’t even realise was a step at all causing issues somewhere lol. Way too common of an experience with me. Might be the ADHD idk

There’s very few steps already.

Reinstalling windows only now has 2 though:

Install windows
Click firmware upgrade

I guess so. I’ll grit my teeth and sign in to my microsoft account, just to be extra sure. I really hate this though, not only because of that, but that this really isn’t the best solution for whenever I want/need to install a bios update again in the future, having to go out of my way to change my entire operating system each time.

I don’t setup windows with a Microsoft account. Even on 11 you can do it without one still if you turn off your wifi at the correct time.

100% agree. You’ll need to figure out how to use Hiren’s properly at some point. Or have another drive for Windows which is also not great.

I can’t possibly imagine what misstep I am making though. I get Hirens on my usb - I have even shared the exact command I used to install it - I reboot into UEFI and put usb on top of the boot order, boot into it, download the bios file after connecting to the wifi and then run the application. Where on earth would I be making a mistake with that? Someone suggested maybe an error happens when downloading the bios file, so I have been vigilant that firefox says ā€œcompleteā€ whenever it is installed, and have done the same with Hirens. There really seems like no room for where else I could be messing up.

Isn’t the point here though to try to cut away at any possible misstep I could possibly be making? I would otherwise attempt to get around signing into a microsoft account as well in any other situation.

I would revert to post 195 on this. It should not take 2 days and 200 posts to update firmware. You should do whatever you think is necessary at this point. Or don’t, and just never update the firmware.
