Update Warning Message: Cannot set file attributes for '/var/log/journal'

Greetings lovely community,

Just saw there’s a new systemd update going from v 249.7 to 250-1 today. systemd is one of those things I look out for when new major updates get released. Minor systemd updates never bother me, but any major new release may cause issues. In this case before updating, I checked to see if there’s any issues across Arch news/Reddit/forums .etc, but I didn’t see any issues reported with systemd so I went ahead and updated (haven’t rebooted yet). I did come across the following update warning message:

( 6/14) Creating temporary files...
Cannot set file attributes for '/var/log/journal', maybe due to incompatibility in specified attributes, previous=0x00080000, current=0x00080000, expected=0x00880000, ignoring.
Cannot set file attributes for '/var/log/journal/16bf55b6a80349cf9ea64c3eaee5fc51', maybe due to incompatibility in specified attributes, previous=0x00081000, current=0x00081000, expected=0x00881000, ignoring.
Cannot set file attributes for '/var/log/journal/remote', maybe due to incompatibility in specified attributes, previous=0x00080000, current=0x00080000, expected=0x00880000, ignoring.
( 7/14) Reloading device manager configuration...

I don’t think I’ve seen this update warning message before, I think it’s safe to ignore, but I’m not 100% certain at this point. Did anyone else update today and had a similar message? Please let me know if there’s any other logs/info I may need to provide or if this message is ‘normal’ and can be safely ignored. Thanks for any help, always appreciate this awesome forum :slight_smile:

Here’s the full update output in case it helps:

There is an issue raised here:

It seems it is already being worked on.

These are also in the Testing repo:

systemd 250-1 -> 250-2
systemd-libs 250-1 -> 250-2
systemd-sysvcompat 250-1 -> 250-2

Ah of course I forget to check out their github! Thanks for the link and your time doing what I should’ve done already :stuck_out_tongue:

Looks like a fix was deployed to testing, so will probably see it show up soon enough on our end. I take it you’ve updated to it already in stable or testing?

I am still on the 250-1 but I didn’t have the issue you and apparently some other users are having.

Yeah, looks like it doesn’t appear to affect every user, I guess I just must be one of the lucky ones. Will just have to wait and see for now I think.

If you feel adventurous, you could install 250.2 already from here (for example):

https://mirror.chaoticum.net/arch/testing/os/x86_64/

sudo pacman -U the-url-of-the-package

If it was a more system breaking issue, I’d be tempted to stray outside of my comfort zone, but since it’s only affected me with a terminal warning message and nothing else that I can currently detect, I will play it safe and just patiently wait for it to make it’s way to us through the usual update channels. Feel free to try it out yourself and let me know how it goes, but since you don’t have the issue, it’s probably a moot point at this point :stuck_out_tongue:

Made a small test in a virtual machine by enabling testing repos, and systemd updated to 250-2 without those error messages.

Then I downgraded back to stable repos, and systemd went to 250-1, and those error messages appeared again.

I guess the messages are some debug code that they forgot to remove before release… :wink:

Yeah that sounds good to me, no harm in waiting for the 250-2 update then, thanks for checking it out and letting us know :smiley:

Got the message as well but things remained functional and it looks like these guys are on it. Always good to chase the messages down though :slight_smile:

This is a condensed output, but this time it didn’t show me the same warning issue as before, so it looks like it’s okay this time around, at least on my end.

How can that be possible now I’m going to do that the same thing so I’m not going to get that… ???

I’m not sure I understand your question exactly, but systemd has gotten a few updates in the last couple of days. systemd went from v 249 to 250 and caused a few warning messages (nothing system breaking thankfully), and I was just commenting that the newest systemd update from v 250 to 250-3 appears to fix the warning issue message. So as long as you’re up to date on your system, you shouldn’t have any issues to worry about.

:thinking:
