Upcycle Windows 7

Usually I deal with these situations in this way.
Install Linux as main OS and Virtual Box contains XP.
Give everything a Window look and put icons and shortcuts on the desktop…
After a while they just don’t know what is what, as long as they do they task as they learned.

Just keep in mind EndevourOS uses more RAM than Windows XP. I am assuming you are installing Windows XP because their PC is old and is low end hardware?

Why not install Windows 7 instead? You can’t even run majority of moden applications on it anymore. I would think Wine would have better chance of running modern Windows applications compared to Windows XP.

Yes i thought so, too @unix_lover. I guess it is the best way to install Windows XP again and get rid of this piece of garbage. My friend can pick it up and he can get mad of the not working dvd drive, the broken hard disk and so on. It has a pentium 4 2,9GHz cpu and 1024 MB of ram. I wouldn’t invest a single dollar for it anymore, but my friend is another opinion i guess. Never mind, not longer my problem.

But thank you for your opinion.

Surprisingly last year when I ran an old ISO image of EOS, it lagged just like with any other distro, but now I am using the latest ISO and firefox does not lag at all, it is smooth when I scroll which is amazing. And this is without Nvidia drivers. Are you guys using some custom kernel or something? Is the kernel different to Kubuntu (as Kubuntu also lagged)?

No, we don’t but the last two kernel versions (5.4 and 5.5) shipped with some major improvements on the Nouveau front. In March Nvidia will announce some project that will improve the relationship between them and the Open-source world. What it is, nobody knows, it’s all under wraps at the moment but it surely is exciting.

Oh that is pretty good.

I hope this applies to legacy nvidia graphics card.

Well, i’m not ready to use a custom kernel. I want the optimum for updates and with a custom kernel, it would work the other way right?

I like the most kernel 5.4.x and its lts support. The new kernel 5.5.2 is fine, too. But not a lts kernel. But i’m happy with endeavouros.
