Typing accents on a US english keyboard?

Is there a way to type accents (e.g. for French, German, Spanish words) under Plasma. I’d hoped right Alt would work to present some kind of option for accented characters, but it simply triggers the application menu (e.g. in Firefox).

I don’t think there is a way to do it as you described it, but there’s an app you can open with a keyboard shortcut, and it will pop up when you need it: https://archlinux.org/packages/?name=kcharselect

The link above is made specifically for KDE/Qt setups, but here are some alternatives, just in case: https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/List_of_applications/Utilities#Text_input

You might explore the use of a compose key:

Another option is to type the Unicode for the special character on your keyboard:

Yet another option is to switch temporarily to a different keyboard layout, which gives you access to different key mappings:

I use a US-keyboard layout with “dead keys”, which allows me to at least use some accents. Like é, è, ë or ä, á, à.

Install the (New Zealand) Maori keyboard layout option - it has a whole lot of extra characters by using the right Alt and Alt + Shift keys

The compose key hint had me scuttle off and have a look in the Plasma keyboard settings, which surprised me by the depth and the lack of search in that ‘advanced’ tab. However ‘compose’ could be set as right Alt in there and whilst there’s no specific pop-up to chose from, it seems that compose+` gives è and compose + ’ gives é, which is what I was looking for immediately.

Thanks to all - attempted web searches didn’t yield this, so I’m grateful indeed.

Just as an aside, it seemed like Plasma ought to offer a pop-up when holding a key down : https://docs.kde.org/stable5/en/plasma-desktop/kcontrol/keyboard/index.html but that option doesn’t appear for me in the settings under Plasma 6.
