I would like to try Hyperland out, but I don’t want to reinstall my system or do a vm. I am currently using lightdm and Cinnamon, can I just pacman -S hyperland and try it out? Looks like lightdm doesn’t work with it, do I have to move to sddm? I have been searching and I don’t see any “guides” that aren’t fresh installs.
You can do that..but you need lots of other packages to make a working configuration (ie you will have HyprLand, but it won’t DO anything).
I assume you mean all this:
sudo pacman -Syu hyprland hyprpaper xdg-desktop-portal-hyprland waybar wofi kitty sddm
Which is fine but can I leave out sddm? and still use, how do I launch?
You can launch it from cmdline of the console if you stop lightdm (or any other greeter).
" While launching from a display manager is not officially supported, users have reported success launching from GDM, SDDM, and others. The upstream wiki maintains a compatibility list with display managers. The hyprland package contains a display manager entry, and all Hyprland AUR packages will generate one automatically.
Both methods provide identical results, plus or minus a few environment variables and services."
don’t get the impression lightdm would be successful maybe search engine ‘hyperland lightdm’ to be sure. so I did DDG and this caught my eye:
i understand wanting to keep everything the same when you do something like this. good luck
Lightdm (at least used to), did NOT like the Wayland compositors like sway and hyprland.
I haven’t ran lightdm in at least two years though, so who knows.
agree one hundred. it will be a dance around the X11 and Wayland parts of this, um, endeavour. I don’t get the feeling LightDM can be kept..
..so now questions becomes can Cinnamon run with GDM or SDDM --maybe that approach?
spitballin for sure
I was thinking just logging into my normal enviorment (lightdm, cinnamon), then tty3 login launch hyprland manually? Maybe I should just vm it up but even more of a pain for something I just want to play with.
I wouldn’t mess around with the Display Manager(s).
Just get a TTY, login and launch hyprland:
$ hyprland
Funny that was the solution I was just thinking I was going to do.
You don’t need to login to your desktop. Get a TTY already from the login screen.
