I’m on Sway but this may possibly apply to other “non-XFCE” systems.
When I right-clicked on an entry in Thunar’s main pane, I didn’t see any icons.
This fix which I came across here, is to edit ~/.config/gtk-3.0/settings.ini to have gtk-menu-images=1 instead of gtk-menu-images=0.
