[ TIP ] How to get good at GNU/Linux

Congratulations:+1:
There is a point here: If you do a clean install, you will lose data along with Windows. How did you deal with that?

Hi
I dealt with it by the magic of USB drives and Hdrive/SSD caddies. I had for 10/15yr
dabbled in Linux, installing and wiping and setting up, I have had years of practice
at it. Still, I learn I have windows machines and they are there for a purpose. But now my
daily driver is EOS I come from ArcoLinux where I learnt some/all of my app knowledge.

I return to uni tomorrow to learn some more M$ computing, until everyone ditches M$
unmass they will be on top.

So to summarize is the only thing I miss is dedicated programs for the like of my streamdeck-XL
there is Linux programs for it but they pail in comparison to the Elgato ethos driver program
they have made the platform available to mac(the enemy, hate them)

Everyone is hating kinda on the old Microsoft no one had truly mentioned Mac. I
cut my teeth on MSdos 5 and Win3.0 Yes those were the days back in 93/94, then
came along win95 which most OS’s now model their look and feel on. A standard
to my knowledge invented by M$ and still flourishes today.

Do you have to lose it all to gain knowledge hmm. Ive not read every comment here
in the list but to get good at it you must MUST daily drive it.

I always had my data on a separate hard disk (formatted in NTFS at that time). Ubuntu could access it. Later, when I had a bit more peace, I got an external disk, backed up my data to it, and then formatted the data disk to ext4 as well. Only later I learned how to move /home to a separate disk.

I keep everything in Google Drive. And yes, I know, Google…but there’s other options that do the same and don’t say Google. I always recommend people store things in an offsite cloud solution when they can for this sort of thing though.

What are the arguments against external USB fuses? Why always this shitty cloud?

Not good in any situation without internet-access.
Plus, although cloud-providers always claim being very safe and accessible at all times, the opposite usually seems true.

Simply a no-brainer, imho.

Data is bloat!

-storage is based on storing your data on someone else’s computer.
Just trust the , he knows his stuff !

External USB sticks are on-site. What happens if your house burns down?

EOS is dependent on internet access for daily operations, so I don’t consider that an issue.

If my house burns down, I have other problems …

Encrypt before uploading.

You store your backup in physically different place.

Bollocks!
I have whole arch repo locally backed up (and some AUR), as well as arch-wiki :upside_down_face:

I DID have my house burn down. Offsite copies are important.

I would rather encrypt my physical backup, than have any dealings with -based storage, especially if it’s Goolag.

I wasn’t referring to you. It’s just a joke about data. :innocent: Hopefully you are not offended?

That is a reason to have randomly generated usernames, so we can’t accidentally refer to someone lol (probably not the stupidest thing I’ve ever said)
