I tend to shy away from single āgreatestā or āfavoriteā anything, because tastes are so subjective and mine change so much over time. Lots of great music in this thread though - Sabbath, Maiden, Metallica, Priest all gotta be in the conversation. The album I come back to more than any other is probably Crack the Skye. Iām a sucker for a concept album, and it checks all the boxes for me for classic riffs, proggy composition, narrative, vocal melody, emotion.
This is not really a serious contender for the Metal GOAT Album. And some metal heads may truly dislike mentioning this album at all.
But from my point of view
Underrated, and controversial as Sepultura wanted to emphasize their Brazilian heritage. And so they incorporated latin, indigenous and other Brazilian styles of music and instrumentation on this album.
Definitely an influential album. Some argue itās Nu-Metal already. But I disagree.
My top doom and black metal albums.
I have quite recently reminded myself that Candlemass release.
Cool stuff.
To me, this is also the best for multiple reasons. I found this CD on the ground near my local super market when I was a teenager. Just the CD, no cover or anything. I popped into my stereo and was blown away from the first riff. Listened the whole album through like 5 times in a row.
It was also the first CD I ever owned and it opened a whole new world to me. After that moment, I was a huge Iron Maiden fan and started listening to music more actively. And started looking for more metal. It was a gateway drug.
Itās a HUGE comeback album for Maiden. Each song is super strong. Maiden doesnāt really have bad songs anyway, but this album is just perfection.
Ride the Lightning is the better album of the two in my opinion. Iām not much of a Metallica fan, but their early material has some great stuff.
Mastodon is one of those bands you just canāt get enough of. No weak albums. No weak songs. Amazing talent. Canāt wait for the new album!
