If the so-called “A.I. Revolution” doesn’t at least concern you yet… just wait until you see this. You don’t need to be familiar with YouTuber Austin Evans to get any of this (though he is one of the YouTube OGs when it comes to tech videos and has a channel well worth your time). Just watch; it’s a bit concerning what A.I. can already do, let alone what awaits us in the coming few years.
Well, I’ll stick to my practice upon that topic.
But I can’t help myself to just leave this very specific comment here:
No plumbers job is at stake (afaik).
We are already in the first stages of the A.I war. Forget media, think Labor. A.I will be taking over low labor jobs (fastfood, intern jobs, computers) A.I will not call out of work because its car broke down A.I wont be a no call no show. A.I will not care if it works 8 hours or 24 hours a day.
A lot of these trades jobs will be affected, maybe not directly. But when a lot of people lose their jobs due to AI they will all look towards the trades, and then the value of trade jobs will go down due to the amount of options of people to hire and more trades jobs being taken at cheaper rates due to competition. Trades may be good currently but won’t be later, same with builders and other jobs like that.
Even factory jobs are not safe as the aim is to automate these jobs with machines and other robotics.
of all the dystopian movies/books I have scene/read (100’s–post-apocalyptic my favorite genre), the original Matrix from, what, 30 years ago?–that one made sense to me as out real future: batteries with no other purpose. whose brains are pacified by a downloaded reality.
when we delegate our existence to a soul-less digital program then humans will have no value and we will have doomed ourselves. it’s occam’s.
I wlll this sit revolution out as I am overwhelmingly unimpressed with AI at present.
Which has been a trend that started way earlier than the AI boom in general. They called it the 4th industrial revolution here in Germany. And that term was phrased in early 2010s. No A.I. involved, just digitalizing the industry at scale, which is still an ongoing effort and would be a prerequisite to advanced automation & autonomous fabrications (which is still science fiction).
In short, Elon Musk still does require laborers within his Tesla factories. He wished that he could hire fewer of them, indeed.
The A.I. boom is generally happening within the digital domain. Not the next construction site where they’re building new housing units, nor the hospital or the retirement home.
And when it comes to a potential indirect effect on the given trades:
You’ll have to be certified to do perform certain jobs. You won’t hire the next best contractor who is legally not allowed to perform certain tasks. And try to get hold of one these times. The qualified tradesmen (at least here in germany) have their shedules booked for months in advance. And that’s not only the case in Germany, but in many of our neighboring countries as well.
In short, only due to the reason that one youtube guy made a video in which he faked his own persona to trick others into thinking that his viewers saw genuine content of him isn’t a proof of anything other than that : The youtube content creator is replaceable (which isn’t that shocking news to me).
You do make some good points and I don’t necessarily disagree, but at least here in the UK I hear a lot of people who say they will certify (I never said non-certified people would do these jobs, certified was assumed since unqualified can’t get hired)
If someones job is gone they have to re-certify for something else to do as a job and many I know or see say the trades, builders, bricklayers, etc (Or advising their children to do the trades) as various digital jobs are seen as not reliable, or this is the sentiment here at least. Hospital or retirement home may be fine but in the UK we don’t consider them as part of the trades like a plumber so maybe our definition of trades is different here.
Regarding indirectly, I see is the increase of “certified” people in these trades jobs, and most companies, landlords, and people mostly care about money and will pay the cheapest certified person for the job, not unqualified people.
We have a shortage of tradesmen here which brings long wait times, here in the UK tradesmen are picky with jobs and charge a lot money since they can choose their jobs due too so much demand, even outright cancelling jobs on short notice to do a more profitable job they come across. Even having lack of interest as there are many more profitable jobs they can pick instead of fitting you in to their time slot, but more people in trades will make these wait times shorter as more can do the work and they will be less picky with the prices or jobs they take.
For now AI is mostly digital, however many jobs are digital, I never said trades jobs are taken over by AI, but more people will qualify for them in the future as an affect of reduced digital jobs. Those people will have to find new work, already seen in 1800s industrial revolution pre-digital.
So while I mention machines and robotics, companies like Boston dynamics are showing progress even if what they show is selective test platforms, even current “AI” just to recognise objects and workplace environments better is useful for those, drones already have AI in them to identify objects to targets uploaded in to them. But labourers will still be required I agree with that, I never implied it would be extinct.
Regardless of YouTube guy, my comments are not related to that. That is unless your first comment was actually a joke towards the video and maybe I took that too seriously and focused on the plumber job part which wasn’t my intention and replied based on the “(afaik)” part since this means “as far as I know” so I thought you wasn’t completely sure and just added my thoughts.
Not buying into AI and don’t feel the need to discuss it.
Opting out!
Interesting. . . . what types of nefarious things can be computer generated using videos with audio? That’s what I’m wondering. . . . Democratic political systems ruled over by corrupt politicians and or Dictatorial regimes come to mind. . . . what to believe? Who can you believe?
Is it ‘REAL’ or is it ‘Memorex’ that’s the question.
Rich
Not discussing this by the way but I don’t even like AI or buy in to it, doesn’t stop companies trying to save money though until they learn their mistake and rest of population reacting to that causing issues though whether right or wrong.
Main problem as I see it is people getting lazy, don’t question things anymore, like others to do their thinking, and believe what they’re told, again without thinking.
There’s not a bit of “intelligence” in AI—it’s just a cleverly named “Big Data Lookup and Summarization Machine”. The data sets used are restricted, both in time and broadness, often biased and not objective. The sources are also often unknown. Plus the machine is programmed to give “perfect-looking” answers, leading to hallucination of “facts” that aren’t.
The cognitive abilities of man’s brain will decrease eventually, because it is much easier outsourcing learning and thinking processes to an “AI”. Leading to more dumb internet posts (that AIs will again pick up), leading to more blind believing in false “facts”.
We’ve seen similar with the advent of general GPS availability and navigation. Can you still read a map (or even buy one)?
Even in supposed-to-be specialist forums, we start seeing issue reports, which resolve a few posts later in “But I asked ChatGPT and it told me to do that! Surely the AI cannot be wrong…”
I still prefer to learn the things I need and want myself. Okay, I’m lazy, too, but the effort checking an AI’s answer is often more than learning how to do it in the first place.
Consciousness and cognitive thinking are the best things nature (or the deity you believe in) gave us. Use them.
THINK.
I don’t think so. The only trade jobs at risk will be the low-level ones, or those of hacks who don’t know what they do. People might look towards the trades, but there are few who can do it. Don’t underestimate a skilled trade job. It may be not rocket science, but it’s not a minimum wage burger flipping job either.
I don’t disagree with anything you say but I don’t understand where you get the idea of me underestimating a trade skill, I am well aware they take 4+ years to fully complete and be certified. I know people and have family members in the trades and they are not stupid people, however it’s best to not underestimate other people and the trades is possible for anyone willing to go through it and survive the full process. Trades jobs partly get a lot of money not just because of skill to qualify and work experience but because there is a shortage of them compared to jobs that need to be done, and a lot of people don’t like getting their hands “dirty” and avoid trades jobs.
A lot of people were not developers even a decade ago (Compared to now) but now it’s becoming a saturated market and harder to get a developer job now. When I was leaving college they started teaching programming to all children by default as soon as they reach secondary school, that never existed when I was in school but back then programming was the biggest thing to get in to, you still can get in to programming but it’s harder, and like anything else you will get hacks but still affects job market. IT support is another job that is harder to get in to as many people started going in to IT based jobs (Even from non-it job backgrounds), and again has the same thing with getting hacks, value of IT support jobs have also went down.
Either way out of a large number of people who may try the trades for a new job, many fail, some may give up, and even if less than 10% make it this will still have an impact and wages will go down, especially if government and school systems start prioratising the basic skills initially to encourage more people to do the full course as they have the core base knowledge.
A.I. is cancer that is ruining youtube. Too many videos made by it. Yesterday my wife got excited about new trailer of becoming movie “Jack the Ripper”. I wasn’t excited, because I hadn’t heard of it. I was right. It was fake A.I. crap. I don’t mind watching funny A.I. videos about Trump, but if the future is this we are doomed.
Ai is not just replacing low labor jobs, think of coders, translators, even doctors, and so on. I’m glad I am retired.
AI is here and has been for years depending on what it is called, but it scares the bejesus (is this a word) out of me. Resumes have been vetted by AI for years and is an accepted practice, robotics in the work place, and many more examples. People are now being interviewed by AI for job positions, and we are being told to accept, social engineering?
The days of accepting what is seen and heard is quickly going the way of the dodo bird. AI is cute at the present moment, it’s like an election, be careful what you wish for. The rhetoric of the “moment” may not be exactly what you expected or thought it was going to be, lots of underlying tones to think about, the “what if” scenarios.
AI will affect the workforce, but the issue is social engineering. Get the people to accept AI as a normal way of life. The pandemic proved to our politicians and those wielding significant influence and power that people cane be “made” to accept a new social norm. Government states that you cannot have anyone in your house but the occupants under threat of persecution. ICE engine cars will be banned and you will need to buy an EV regardless of what you want, no more freedom of choice, or true mobility.
It’s a catch 22, the digital age is upon us, the newer generations that have and are growing up with a cell phone at centre stage will be driving this event. The cognitive processes needed for informed and educated decisions may be significantly curtailed. watched the movie “Accountant 2”, lots of young people doing the computer thing to find information.
I don’t mind AI, it’s the people behind AI and behind the scene are the ones I don’t trust and scare me the most. The safeguards are not in place to protect society from this potential threat. I’ve read about researchers trying to implant DNA with AI - pushing the envelope, and who would be funding this - follow the money. Not far fetched considering that Star Trek was regarded as way out in left field when it aired in the '60s.
I did a motorcycle handling course back a few years. The facilitator was a seasoned motorcycle racer. He mentioned that motorcycles were designed to do everything well, then we get on the motorcycle and all bets are off - the human factor. AI is no different.
I’ll finish my rant with this famous quote: “That’s one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind.” This quote is often cited as a powerful symbol of human achievement and exploration." AI would seem to be another piece of the “one giant leap for mankind”, good, bad or indifferent, who knows, time will tell.
If we allow AI to be used as common place in our lives then the next generation will be a very uneducated and unintelligent group. It’s already bad enough with the use of cell phones and social media by young children. It’s a big mistake. AI may have it’s usefulness but we need to be careful in how we allow it to be used and or interact in our daily lives.
I’m only talking in the next few years. Yes eventually A.I will replace a lot of those jobs. It will of course replace the “Worker Jobs First” Getting rid of the common worker will save corporations billions every year in Labor/Benefits.
meanwhile Corporations are looking at the bottom line. doesn’t matter about what we the people want it about what makes money.
Yeah a few days ago I saw a documentation, that learning languages may be obsolete in a few years cause of realtime AI translation. This will definitely make us dumber and more dependent.
On the other hand I read an article on a german technews website, that queried IT support managers. And most responded that AI in techsupport has fallen far short of its intended goals and isn’t a real improvement over human support. But who knows what will happen in the coming years. I think craftsmanship will increasingly become a desirable profession again.
There are many voices, that say AI kinda is industrialisation 2.0.
Beside this AI could be the next big “religion” that controls the masses.
