@Schlaefer Nicolas Fella (KDE) answered:
I think this works as intended. If you enable this then Alt+Tab switches
between all the windows not on the current desktop. If you don’t hve any other
desktops or there are no windows there then nothing will happen
I’m not sure I agree. I’ll do some more tests and see if what happens may indeed be “intended”.
Yeah. Actually the settings UI indicates a “filter by”. So “All other desktops” should not show the content of the current desktop. Technically true.
But that seems to me as a very non-intuitive behavior. I would expect the choice to be “this desktop only” or “this desktop and all over virtual desktops”.
That said if you have multiple virtual desktops and if there are no windows on other virtual desktops there isn’t any user feedback whatsoever. Which was me assuming there was a hardware/software bug.
On top of that if you’re on one virtual desktop and a second desktop has only one window the task switcher shows no feedback either and offering no choice switching to that window. Imho that is broken too: in that case the keyboard shortcut should show the task switcher with one window only.
So there seems to a convolution of possible bugs and/or different expectations.
That was my expectation as well - but that’s not how it seems to be intended. I’ve tried out this setting with a few scenario’s and now understand what it is supposed to do. And it’s doing that, I think.
As this topic is about testing Plasma 6 and as this “issue” also occurs in Plasma 5, ánd “works as intended” it’s not something to follow up here.
I’ll mark the bug report as “works as intended”, even though it may not be intuitive behaviour.
According to Nicholas Fella (KDE):
“For that you need to uncheck the “Virtual desktops” checkbox”.
Sounds reasonable esp. in the plasma 6 testing context.
I have an outstanding bug regarding to a long ago (in thread) mentioned bug (present in KDE 5 also) regarding the screen dimming function in energy saving, where brightness is never restored after dimming. I believe three other people in the last week have also confirmed the issue with regard to amdgpu driver. Of course, it could be a problem with the amd driver lol.
I still have (regard it as a widget issue?) a non-funcfional logout/shutdown/reboot in my menu. Is it just me? (I think I’ve tried all the alternative widgets for the menu).
As to log out etc, i believe @sammiev reported that as resolved for him:
Not me…maybe he’ll share which widget he’s using for menu. I’m sure the correct one HAS to work lol (or I should say the updated one).
The poweroff button is just that from the widgets, the main menu icon gives you the choice of logout absolutely. I haven’t tried the other way in sometime so not sure if it’s working or not. Been away from my computer for a bit, so unable to give it a spin. Currently on a road trip at this time.
Have fun - in case of any nice photo’s there’s always Photos you've taken…
All I can say is, that I use what I would call the standard or default menu and then choose power-off or log-out etc; for me all that works. I’ve set the laptop-power button to “power-off” and that works also.
Hah, and I drive a non-custom menu…and have no idea what the default is…I’ll have to cycle through options again.
From the article:
Plasma 6 is very usable for daily driving now, but still in need of some final bug-fixing and polishing to get it into a solid state by February.
In my experience this is true. I know some are still experiencing problems, but in my rather simple use case, things work as they should 99% of the time.
People have been working hard.
Which custom menu did you get to work? It seems like all of the Plasma extension developers are waiting until Plasma 6 is released to update their extensions for Plasma 6. I can’t seem to get most extensions to work, so I’m still rocking the standard menu.
I agree that Plasma 6 has been very usable as a daily driver since the alpha release. My only issue has been the lack of access to customizations, since all of the “Get New…” buttons are broken, the lack of customizations themselves, and the lack of automatic tiling. In fact, the only reasons I switch back to Plasma 5 every now and then are Bismuth and it’s slightly more polished.
I’ve most recently been using the dashboard style menu. Everything seems to work fine, except the logout/shutdown/reboot options
But yes, it does seem no one is preppring widgets in advance or (maybe) the store won’t allow two versions? (no idea)
In October 2023 Nate Graham (KDE) made clear that people should start porting to Plasma 6:
He also states that the Plasma6-widgets should be uploaded to:
Edit: not a lot of Plasma6-widgets have been uploaded yet.
Yeah, and even when I changed to the simple application launcher (which shows updated), no love when trying to reboot.
I’m gonna do the if in doubt thing and create a new user with default configs and see if it works there.
