Systemd boot AMDGPU SMU error

Hello,

For some months I’ve been having an intermittent issue during systemd boot relating to my AMD GPU. The problem disappeared for a few days but, on one of the last system updates, it has since returned.

After starting Gnome’s display manager and target graphical Interface It throws the following message and gets stuck there for about 10 seconds:
SMU: I'm not done with your previous command: SMN_C2PMSG_66:0x00000040 SMN_C2PMSG_82:0x00000001

A photo of the screen:

The computer works fine after boot without any issues.
The card is an AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT
The running kernel: Linux 6.8.8-arch1-1

By running journalctl -b | grep amdgpu I get a stack of errors:

I tried searching for this error but found nothing that seemed related and I’m still a noob despite using linux systems for 5 years (EndeavourOS for 2). Asking AI for help did result in a better prediction of possible issues, but nothing beats forum experts.

Is there anything I can do to solve this error or at least speed up boot time?

Thank you all!

Your motherboard has the original UEFI Firmware(Bios). There have been 16 Bios updates since this board was manufactured. You may want to update to the latest version. Can’t guarantee this will fix this issue but the Bios updates have newer AGESA which is important for Ryzen processors as well as other features. Especially important with the with the hardware you have.

Thank you! I didn’t think to update or check the BIOS. It is now the latest version available from the motherboard support site.

From: v: 1.10 date: 10/13/2022
To: v: 1.F0 date: 03/28/2024

Unfortunately the error remains, but seems to have changed slightly and isn’t always shown as it was on my original photo. Now sometimes I just get a black screen after Reached target Graphical Interface for the same 10 seconds before the login screen appears.

Instead of SMN_C2PMSG_66:0x00000040 it’s now SMN_C2PMSG_66:0x0000000D
And SMN_C2PMSG_82:0x00000001 became SMN_C2PMSG_82:0x00000000

Are you using “amdvlk”

Edit: You should use vulkan-radeon for gaming.

https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/AMDGPU

Do you have the setting in the UEFI firmware set to dedicated gpu card rather than auto?

As far as I can tell everything in the BIOS is set to auto, but I didn’t find specifically a firmware setting for gpu…

Is there a way to check if I’m using amdvlk or vulkan-radeon?

The page you linked is beyond my current understanding of the system and commands, but I ran some checks: I do have Vulcan packages installed, if I’m not mistaken it was because of Lutris and Bottles complaining about something several months ago, searched using “pacman -Qs vulkan”:

local/lib32-vkd3d 1.10-1

vulkan-radeon may have been installed as a dependency. Check with pacman -Qi vulkan-radeon

Yes it may only have an auto vga setting.

I wonder what your dmesg shows. Post the url.

sudo dmesg | eos-sendlog

And here is the link for dmesg output: https://0x0.st/XX_G.txt

I tried reading the log to check if something being called failed, but honestly I have no idea what even half of it means…

0.002880] Secure boot enabled

I see that secured boot is enabled in UEFI Bios. Can you disable secure boot and see if the problem goes away?

Edit: Are you dual booting with Windows?

The only issue i see is the error messages related to amdgpu smu errors.

Edit: I’m not sure if these are just informational. Not all error messages are a problem.

No dual Booting, just EndeavourOS.

Today I got no errors and boot was noticeably fast. I checked dmesg and there was only 1 SMU message:

Then I disabled SecureBoot and I got the stack of SMU errors again:

Interestingly systemd-analyse says boot takes about 14 seconds in both cases, so the issue is before systemd starts doing something. Although I’m not sure if that’s how it works, I was trying to understand the boot process and read it in a schematic from: https://www.freedesktop.org/software/systemd/man/latest/bootup.html

I really haven’t tried removing the card and adding it again to the slot…

Or maybe I have to just live with these errors, It’s just once a day and seemingly doesn’t really affect anything on the system beyond being annoyingly random

Secure boot shouldn’t be used. EndeavouOS doesn’t support it out of the box. I always cleared the keys on my MSI system. My dmesg is almost pristine but again I have a different chipset motherboard, not as new of a processor and also gpu. My boot logs are also very clean. Sometimes there is some error messaging related to KDE Plasma desktop.

This is acceptable as long as it’s not spamming over and over again. I still think you should disable secure boot.

Also are you using luks encryption?

Thank you for the Secure Boot indication, I’m keeping it disabled now.

I have also removed and reconnected the graphics card to no effect on the SMU error spamming.

I’m not using any encryption, but just to be sure I ran lsblk -f. From what I read it should have shown an encryption column if it were present.

I would just leave it now with secure boot turned off and see how it goes with updates. Just check dmesg and see what you are getting. I’m not even sure if the smu error is what is causing your delay on boot. You can also check journalctl -b -01 which is the latest boot. Keep an eye on things and see.

Edit: Keep an eye out on the UEFI (Bios) updates since this is a newer chipset motherboard i would expect there to be further updates yet.
