Systemd adds age verification [?]

Could the devs please state clearly and immediately if the Systemd in EOS will contain age verification. If “yes” then I’m out of here right now, even though I only just arrived.

Is it possible to fork Systemd to remove all age verification stuff ?

yeah if they dont back down on this im jumping ship to something else like artix/void/gentoo. not in it for this surveillance shit.

Didn’t systemd just add the ability to store DOB as a possible field in the user record?

If so, that has no meaning at all.

That isn’t age verification…

Yer from my understanding you could also just lie about it as well, so not age verification just something to keep the people in power happy.

True but in this case there is nothing capturing your age in the first place.

As of right now this isn’t real age verification.

The problem is though that it is a slippery slope to comply. Like, what’s next? Will it ask you every time you create a new user how old it is? It also leaves the door open that you get asked for the clear name at some point, these politicians will just say if this wasn’t a problem, than adding this also is not a problem. At what point will they ask to put your ID in there? Don’t worry it’s just locally and doesn’t leave your device. Unless you get hacked or something… And just for now… At some point we may ask you to verify anyway.
Don’t know how often it has been said, “doesn’t leave your device, all locally” and it was a straight up lie. Maybe not the thing that systemd develops, but some program/browser/website with access to it could have the ability to. Like for cross checking if the data you put is true.

As it is, NOW it may not be a problem… But for how long?

Yeah bro!
:call_me_hand:t6:

Nuffin like building a future prison for us all!
It’s just 4 walls with bars to fit someone inside…
Don’t worry bro - feds would never lock it!!!

We made a statement about age verification in our Titan release post on our website.

In my opinion this video is just clever systemd hate, harnessed getting clicks via this heated subject, and by taking a look at it’s comments on YouTube, it managed to hit it’s mark.

I would think the answer to that is yes since CachyOs is planning a patch to either disable the Systemd age verification or remove it altogether.

It appears to be a business model that works for him, but I’m never going to watch. In fact, I find it as objectionable as age verification :winking_face_with_tongue:

Not wanting to get off topic, but I can see the issues with Systemd. WAY TOO MUCH falls under its umbrella.

Ella Ella Eh Eh Eh :umbrella_with_rain_drops:

Why don’t you try to get some information about it first ?

      <varlistentry>
        <term><option>--birth-date=<optional><replaceable>DATE</replaceable></optional></option></term>

<listitem><para>Takes a birth date for the user in ISO 8601 calendar date format
(<literal>YYYY-MM-DD</literal>). The earliest representable year is 1900. If an empty string is
passed the birth date is reset to unset.</para>

        <xi:include href="version-info.xml" xpointer="v261"/></listitem>
      </varlistentry>

looks like it’s optional like the real name, the location or the email address fields, I guess in the countries/US states making age verification mandatory, the date of birth field will be used, but I don’t see why it would be enabled in countries with no age verification laws.

To be honest, I am not even sure it will be. This isn’t an age verification system in any way.

There are age verification implementations being discussed and it isn’t even clear if they will use this field. Even if they did use this field, there would simply be a different implementation on non-systemd distros.

Correct but it could still be added, if this is laying the foundation.

If they have no plans to use it, why add it at all?

I got a feeling we are just seeing the tip of the iceberg here.

I don’t see how systemd could add age verification. It doesn’t seem like a logical or practical place for it. Someone opened a PR to add DOB to a list of attributes about a user and the PR was accepted. I don’t think there is more to it than that.

Could this field be used to store DOB for age verification? Sure. But you could also store it somewhere else.

To me, it looks like the most likely implementation for an age verification system is at the desktop portal level but we will see where this evolves.

Clearly the person who opened the PR has plans for it but those plans probably live outside of systemd. However, this isn’t something that can be done in isolation. There needs to be a more unified approach to this.

A feature not logically or practically belonging in an init system has never stopped systemd from implementing them before xD

I think this post was questionable even at the beginning, but now it seems to be taking direction, where facts start to meld into conspiracy theories.

No one knows what this implementation means in real life and how it even is able to actualize. I think we should leave conspiracies to the closet where they belong and trust more into known and available facts than “sages” having beard and baseball cap.
