System freezing after opening EneavourOS tools

Hi,

My first post here, but not a newbie to using Linux. Been triple-booting EndeavourOS along with Ubuntu 24.04 and Windows 10 for some time without any issues, but recently have started to experience hard freezes shortly after opening any EndeavourOS application, such as Welcome or apps.info. This started around 6-8 weeks ago, after an update to the Welcome app I believe, and everything was running OK prior to this.

The applications starts up OK and responds initially for maybe 30-60 secs, but then everything locks and I have to forcibly power off. There is no indication of any problem on screen, and I have tried starting the apps from the CLI, but no errors are shown. I also uninstalled and re-installed the Welcome app to no avail.

I haven’t investigated this further as it only seems to be a problem when using the EndeavourOS apps, nothing else seems to cause a problem so I am writing this from Firefox running on EndeavourOS, and I am not experiencing any issues when using Ubuntu or Windows. But if anyone has a suggestion on how I can resolve this, it would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the forum!

  • Which DE are you using?
  • Are you using wayland?

Hi Manuel, my apologies for not including this.

I am using Gnome DE and yes, running on wayland. Must admit I haven’t tried switching to X as haven’t used it for a long while now and as I said, this issue doesn’t seem to be affecting anything else.

Do the apps work when using X11 session?

We know wayland has had some issues with yad which is used by a few EndeavourOS apps.

Thanks Manuel, you are correct, switching to X resolves the issue. I notice that GDK_BACKEND is set to X11 for yad regardless of login WM, but this is apparently not helping on my system. Note that everything was working fine until 6-8 weeks ago as I mentioned, and it was only after updates that this occurred. Whilst there were updates to EOS apps at the time, it could equally well have been other updates?

So unless you require any further info, I think I’ll regard this as closed, and hope that a solution or replacement is found for yad! Thanks again.

I’d say quite likely so. But hard to tell which updates can cause this since there are many that could be the culprit. And we know wayland still has a few problems regardless of yad or EndeavourOS apps, so probably the only thing we can do is wait until wayland’s problems are fixed.

Still I don’t know whether yad will start supporting wayland better than before or not. Seems like the yad dev needs a helping hand.

But great that X11 works for you and you can carry on with it. :+1:
