It’s been a while since i wanted to start using Linux in a daily use, when i heard about EOS i wanted to give it a try which i did but the thing is one of my main computer usage, out of work is gaming, and what was my surprise when after a few minutes of playing, i faced a system hard freeze. system would went completely unresponsive, nothing would work and all i could do was the power button. I also dunno it it’s worth mentioning but those freezes happen on every games
I did a bit of research about this issue and i found some people having a similar issue but what worked for them didn’t worked for me.
-I tried various Kernels including LTS ver, none of them worked since then.
-switching from Wayland to x11 didn’t helped either.
-Switching proton version also didn’t worked
-reinstalling AMD drivers didn’t helped
-Since i have my CPU being overclocked, i tried without oc which didn’t changed anything
-I even tried a clean install which led to the same exact issue
-Tried another arch based distro to see how it would go but same happened, The said distro was Garuda Linux.
Based on your system specs, you SHOULD have no issues running games on Linux.
However, it’s not just your system that matters when it comes to running games on a platform they were not made for. Your settings, install method like game launchers and libraries or WINE, the game itself, et cetera matters as well.
Now, you said Proton. Is it Steam or direct Proton? Or Lutris, Heroic, etc?
Did you try to use Gamescope, EnvyControl, or a similar tool?
You said it happens with “every” game. Which ones? Again, this matters.
You may also want to try Hyprland for gaming on Linux. It’s surprisingly fantastic for gaming. You can install it alongside KDE, and they will work together without issues. I’ve been using it for the past week and a half for gaming (and general use) with no issues.
I could also be a case of bad graphics card(or even bad Power supply in some cases)
I have a bad graphics card in one PC and it just freezes or go black screen in 98% of games at random!
I just use it as a HTPC atm but it may die soon.
I tried both Proton from Steam with various versions and from ProtonUp-qt, also tried Lutris. For other tools such as EnvyControl or Gamescope, i will give them a try and same will go for Hyperland. For the question about which games, i tried on Marvel rivals, warframe, and The witcher 3 from Heroic, they all froze my system
FYI, I think (from own experience) Witcher 3 runs at Gold or Platinum level (ie should be good), so looking more like some people said, a hardware issue.
Linux gaming has never been so good (imo) and pretty much everything (w/o kernel anticheat) runs great.
Windows being the cludge it is, is known for ‘handling’ hardware that misbehaves.
You should also be looking to the forums in what ever gaming platform software you are using. It may be more helpful finding quicker solutions to your issues.
I did a quick test by switching to gdm and my games did just as they should, smooth and clean so it might be a KDE issue, would appreciate to figure out on what cause this cuz i just don’t like the look of Gnome while KDE is perfect, but at this point i’d better post this on KDE forum i think
For clarity: GDM is just a login manager. Gnome is a whole desktop environment.
As I mentioned above, Hyprland and KDE can work together. However, Gnome and KDE are mortal enemies. You are likely to have other issues start popping up if you have both installed for the same user.
It s a shot in the dark, but try to change the window modes in graphic settings of the game. I have an issue in Horizon Zero Dawn when I run game in full-screen mode. It runs for a few seconds to a few minutes, then everything freezes. I can change it to windowed mode, which is basically the same size, and it runs fine.
I think i owe you guys an update after all that silence but i do figured out on what was the cause of those freezes and they were coming from my XMP not working on ram hungry tasks, so i had to disable it and now everything is working perfectly, somehow
