System Freezes, no CTR+ALT+F*

Hello,

sometimes my system randomly freezes. The times it froze was while using zoom from aur and vlc from community repo.
I can’t even use the emergency Terminal trick (CTRL+ALT+F*).
I looked into my Xorg.log.old and the last entry is the Cuplrit it think.
The device HID 046a:0023 is my keyboard, I can change the keyboard, but I think this wont fix anything :man_shrugging:. I think this is me hammering on the keyboard …

I use the i3 edition with calamaris installer.

Before you do anything, read this and, enable the Magic SysRq key.

This way, you will be able to at least reboot safely when your computer freezes again, without risking filesystem corruption.

yea better to use “hide details” if logs are longer or use a pastebin service like we have included in eos-sendlog

p.e.:
journalctl -b -0 | eos-sendlog

would be good to see the boot log as it can give a hint if something gets error on initialization.

Please give some details about installed Desktop and install method.

Me myself are on i3 and using Nvidia gt-710 card I tried using Open Source drivers but nouveau gave me issues on tearing and freezes all the times, so i do use Nvidia Drivers.
As they are on legacy branch now it will need to take 470xx drivers from AUR.

does this work for you? i tried but it had no effect on my system.

I will try Magic SysRq key,but the bug doesn’t happen reliably.
I will do what is there and if it happens again, I will report back.

I installed the i3 edition with the Clamaris installer.

Yes.

Perhaps you have a non-standard (laptop) keyboard, so you can’t find the SysRq key?

Non standard keyboard yes… but I can find the SysRQ key

I use this quite a bit so works on plasma at least.

SysRq is independent of any DE or WM. It issues commands directly to the kernel, so, if enabled, it should work on any (reasonably standard) Linux kernel.

Try to plug in an external keyboard to test it. It’s perfectly safe to reboot your computer that way, so feel free to test it as much as you want (of course, RAM will be cleared so data in running applications not yet written to the disk will be gone).

I see already from inxi output

Then I don`t get this question…

I do post this at the same time when you added the inxi output…

this is the issue here I think that USB was not working…

I added:
echo 'kernel.sysrq=1' | sudo tee /etc/sysctl.d/99-reisub.conf
rebooted.
opened my zoom meeting and my systemcrashed again.
I could not reboot with the keyboard shortcut.
So I had to shut down with the power down button.

In my opinion, the problem is that something ges wrong in Xserver and then Linux breaks.
I’m on my windows on the same machine, since I have a meeting, so I can’t send logs right now.
I’m not dualbooting, I change my drives.

you are on a Desktop system and have keyboard on USB connected? i see in most cases freezups freezes USB also… so in this case the magic key can not work
My solution is using ssh what do work in most cases… but using Nvidia Drivers I do not have any such freezes.

I will try proprietary Nvidia tonight.

FWIW it does work on my copmuter (Arch KDE - I just retried again to make sure). . but I have had it freeze on two occasions I can recalll where this did not work for whatever reason and I had to kill the power. It’s not 100% in my experience, but usually works for me, although system freezes are extremely rare - maybe 4-5x all year.

Not trying to take away form the OP’s thread.

agreed… :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye: me too …
