Switching to EndeavourOS – Update Frequency & Gaming Performance on ASUS ExpertBook B1500CEPE

Hey everyone,

I’m considering switching to EndeavourOS from Windows and wanted to clarify a few things before making the jump.

  1. How frequently do I need to update? Should I update daily or every time I turn on my laptop? I need stability since I’m a student, so I can’t afford random system breaks during class. :joy:

  2. Driver & Gaming Performance: Will EndeavourOS support the latest drivers (or at least provide good performance for gaming)? My laptop is an ASUS ExpertBook B1500CEPE with an Intel Core i5 (10th/11th Gen), NVIDIA GeForce MX330, 8GB RAM, and a 15.6” FHD display.

I’m mainly looking for a balance between performance and stability—something that won’t break on me when I least expect it. Would love to hear from anyone with experience!

Thanks!

There is no specified frequency but waiting too long between updates can make them more error prone. I recommend updating at minimum every 1-2 weeks.

Yes, EOS(via Arch) has a broad variety of drivers and they are usually quite up-to-date.

I update every day because if I ever have to roll back, there will be less to roll back.

Welcome to the forum!

Some additional tips that may help you get more stability:

  • When the package linux has a bigger version jump, it may be wise to postpone system update for the next subversion. For example, 6.12.10 → 6.13.1 is such a bigger version jump that just happened, so waiting for version 6.13.2 or later may in some cases help fix driver bugs.
  • I’d recommend using command eos-update for updating the system. It has some additional stability checks on top of pacman. See also: eos-update -h.
  • There are some great and useful threads on this forum about how to maintain the EndeavourOS install.

Perhaps this will offer some guidance as well:

Thanks for reply, as my main priority is daily usage (specially study related ), so i don’t want it to break/cause bug mid class:sweat_smile:.
.
Just wanna make sure it won’t cause mal function during work. Isn’t there any method that will delay rolling release as like manjaro(I’m not sure)?

It isn’t a timebomb.

It doesn’t update on it’s own. Updates only happen when you make them happen.

So as long as you don’t deliberately run updates when you are in the middle of something important, it shouldn’t be a concern.

Short: Yes, don’t update.

Long: Choose the time well when to update, for example in the beginning of a weekend. If there are any problems, come here and ask for help. You’ll find great, friendly, and swift help here.

And when i won’t work i will update then :slightly_smiling_face:.

Thanks for help:heart:
