I am KDE user as it is my preferred DE (desktop environment). BUT I think you should use LXQT as your stock DE if you are going to leave XFCE. – Why? The default should be kept light and use fewer resources for older systems. Yet, still modern enough that it is useable, which is why I suspect you’r…

The problem is that it’s ALWAYS stuck that way.

you can customize LXQt, hide the bar and e.g. install a dock menu. Edit: that’s why you have a free choice of desktop environments under linux. a style for every taste.

[image] Linux-Is-Best: Trust me, LXQT loads so much better in comparison. Of course, but we are not comparing LXQt with KDE, we’re comparing Xfce with KDE, and Xfce uses more resources. It’s Xfce > KDE > LXQt (when it comes to resource usage).

in fact, there are benchmarks where xfce uses more resources than KDE.

[image] joekamprad: will need to be real old hardware to not be able to start KDE … I have this here potato of a laptop, from 2011 or so. System: Kernel: 6.1.25-1-lts arch: x86_64 bits: 64 compiler: gcc v: 12.2.1 parameters: BOOT_IMAGE=/boot/vmlinuz-linux-lts root=UUID=88338df7-c57…

[image] Linux-Is-Best: I find it hard to imagine LXQT would be harder to maintain than KDE, with all the bells and whistles KDE offers. For an offline install, I suspect basic and simple should be the goal. exactly where kde is the better candidate in case maintainment of it… also it can be…

I generally have no fight in this, even though I made the suggestion. I am perfecting OK with the final choice being KDE if that is the goal. In fact, I am pleased they did not select Gnome (I’m not a fan, but so many distros seem to pick it). And ultimately, whatever DE is picked, the installer le…

[image] Linux-Is-Best: If you think KDE was going to be snappy with such a system, you’re silly, and I admire your sense of humor. I tried Xfce and KDE on that same laptop, I’m telling you, Xfce is painfully slow, KDE works just fine (not super snappy as dwm, obviously, but fine). With Baloo …

I suspect you changed something personally on your end. XFCE isn’t known to use a lot of resources. That said, I have found LXQT to be either comparable or, in some instances, lighter on resources. I am curious what your hardware setup is.

[image] Linux-Is-Best: I am curious what your hardware setup is. I literally posted inxi above! :man_facepalming:
