At this point I’m just kind of praying this is one of those problems that just randomly solve themselves after a while. My GPU cost me nearly 1k€ and I can’t find the invoice mail, nor am I sure if this would be covered by the warranty so it better not be faulty. I’m gonna try removing all virtual desktops but 1 later and see if that does anything
You know, if things don’t work, maybe using Windows isn’t that bad. There’s no shame in trying to maximize your GPU. If Linux didn’t work for ya for gaming, it is okay. Dual boot Windows 10 IoT Enterprise and run with that. A SSD is cheaper than a new GPU.
Plus, it isn’t worth suffering on Linux just because you wanna play games on Steam. It didn’t work for you, some reason. Maybe next time, but really, there’s no shame in going back to Windows.
Nope. I was never ever even a Windows user to begin with, I used to use macOS and honestly I am not gonna go back to that either. I don’t think it’s possible to run macOS on anything but a mac anyways tbh.
My hatred for Windows comes from being forced to use it at work. I have hated every single experience I have had with it and installing it on a VM just hit the last nail in the coffin. Worst software experience to date, which says a lot because I’ve had my last debian attempt on this PC die on me at 2am.
EndeavorOS works with nvidia and I prefer it not working in some areas to literally anything about Windows. Thanks for the encouragement and I don’t mean this post in any angry way to you (it probably comes off that way, sorry) but I will never consider Windows xDDD
Thank you for all the help thus far, I really appreciate all the energy put into me and my issue with steam and nvidia hahah. I pray it will fix itself
I didn’t knew your background. I thought you were a Windows user, to be honest, since most people were at some point Windows users.
Hmm… I’m honestly not sure. Maybe it is just a driver issue. I will try one more thing, though. I’m sorry if someone already asked for this, but can you run inxi -G
and send the full output from the terminal here?
Absolutely fair thing to assume, honestly the only reason I didn’t ever use windows is because neither of my parents like or use Windows. My mother uses macOS, my father uses Linux (and windows for work) xD I actually don’t think I’ve ever met another Linux user other than my father in real life if I really think about it…
I ran the command, this is the output:
Graphics:

A few things that we might check.
- Can you please select X11 instead of wayland in sddm screen and check if games are working well or not?
- If still not working can you please paste the output of
sudo journalctl -p 3 -xb
I’m already on X11 instead of Wayland, Wayland doesn’t work for me at all. Screen glitches generally, it’s never worked with nvidia, not on Debian, not on Endeavor.
is there anything in that command that could doxx me or something? Because I’m seeing a lot of red which is probably relevant to my problem but also I don’t wanna be posting my mac address or something. There’s 29 lines of it (ETA: not sure if that is a stupid or valid question but yeah)
You can paste it by masking the private info for you.
journalctl’s output gives the information of errors since last boot. It only prints out, changes nothing.
Here is my blog about it if you have concerns => https://mozgurbayhan.com/blog/single/69
I think it’s Kwin_x11. It keeps shitting itself whenever I open a steam game and dumping cores. It does the process several times with a different process ID and then at the end it says this:
░░ Subject: Process 29604 (kwin_x11) dumped core
░░ Defined-By: systemd
░░ Support: https://lists.freedesktop.org/mailman/listinfo/systemd-devel
░░ Documentation: man:core(5)
░░
░░ Process 29604 (kwin_x11) crashed and dumped core.
░░
░░ This usually indicates a programming error in the crashing program and
░░ should be reported to its vendor as a bug.
I have no idea how to get the full coredump text. It’s so long I have to page through it and copy-pasting gets weird, I’m sorry. There’s a bunch of numbers and shit in there, here’s one of them:
Stack trace of thread 45082:

It does it several times within seconds of each other. One happened at 23:38:44, the next at 23:38:49. I had Hades open for less than a minute and it gave me 800 lines of just dumping cores and crashing every few seconds.
I’m sorry if I sound dumb for not knowing how to paste that much text from a command line, I usually stuck to debian based stuff which my dad knows how to help with in person. I’m both good at computers and bad at them at once, somehow. I can’t even explain why. I badly need to take a course on this stuff but I can’t find one near me hahaha
EDIT:
It suddenly let me scroll.
Here you go, one full core dump sequence:

ELF object binary architecture: AMD x86-64
░░ Subject: Process 45066 (kwin_x11) dumped core
░░ Defined-By: systemd
░░ Support: https://lists.freedesktop.org/mailman/listinfo/systemd-devel
░░ Documentation: man:core(5)
░░
░░ Process 45066 (kwin_x11) crashed and dumped core.
░░
░░ This usually indicates a programming error in the crashing program and
░░ should be reported to its vendor as a bug.
I hope there is no sensitive info in here because I did not see anything that looked like an IP address or something
it is glibc (system calls) used by qt6, rest of the dump means nothing but i think it is not the main reason.
Anyway. As I said journal might give an idea.
My father suggested I install another DE in addition to KDE and see if it works on there. Might go and do that this weekend, once I figure out how
Always a good idea to try. If you do this though I would suggest a WM instead of DE as a DE will draw in many programs that may conflict with others.
My dad said I could like, have two installed and then select which I use in the session, which wouldn’t cause conflicts with programs(?). I’m not sure what exactly he said since we don’t speak English at home but I’ll ask him about it again today so I can get that ball rolling again! Thanks for the suggestion!
UPDATE. I updated my PC and it just straight up deleted all my kernels and I think this specifically happened because of nvidia-dkms, it had some weird stuff going on in the updates. Unless there is a way to recover it, I’ve lost everything.
We’re currently trying debian because debian can apparently access the previous partition’s content, so unless it somehow messed this up, we might be able to get my home directory onto my HDD. But yeah I am never installing nvidia-dkms again. Debating just trying Fedora at this point. There has to be some Linux that doesn’t randomly break or remove its kernel…
edit: installing nvidia-dkms increased the initramdisk size and caused my kernel to delete itself. Fixed. Perhaps this also fixed my steam games lmao
Bite your tongue
Meh… There are some slightly bloat-less versions of Windows that can be used for gaming if Linux really doesn’t work for you and it seems that for OP, Linux doesn’t really work for him.
Actually, after my kernel killed itself over the initram getting larger, Steam games have stopped bugging. I hesitate to mark it as fixed just yet but I guess for future reference when I start getting this issue I need to back up my PC and get my kernel to yeet itself lol
I think what fixed is more the fact that you rebuilt the kernels. That’s my theory, though. I don’t know for sure.
