Space Shuttle Endeavour Wallpaper

This is more of a historical photo for wallpaper purposes rather than art, but I found it interestingly relevant nonetheless. I have read through the naming process of EndeavourOS (had no clue about Inspector Morse, my first thoughts were to the Space Shuttle which was ALSO named after the HMS Endeavour under control of James Cook) - and I grew up in a household that followed all things space.

That being said, I was able to find an image of the Space Shuttle Endeavour launching for it’s 25th and final flight on May 16, 2011. The image is only 1440x810 - I haven’t been able to find a higher resolution yet. What I found awesome about this photo is the realism, the clearly visible Endeavour on the Shuttle’s wing, and the epic display of her final lift-off!

Totally forgot the facts behind the naming of the Endeavour space shuttle.

But as the current '.iso release is named EndeavourOS neo… I hereby pledge for an EndeavourOS retro edition which isn’t space themed but on that naval vessel instead ?

Just as an idea…

@joekamprad to your point, I’m sure on the larger monitors and laptops with much higher resolution, it would not be a very good idea.
I have the (mis)fortune of working with an HP 14" laptop with resolution of 1366x768, so it does fit the bill quite perfectly.

good… considering it for the 2029 release?

If you count on me providing more than that image grabbed from wikimedia … I’ll eventually be able to deliver at that deadline.

Found that very same image on wikimedia commons, it’s available to download from nasa.gov as well. Higher resolution, 3000x1996px, available to the public domain.

Just was hidden on the wikipedia article of it’s last flight, at the bottom of the article is usually a link to further content available on wikimedia, there are some different shots available, also a few pictures taken a few seconds earlier / later from that same perspective, it’s a series of four images. Just check the entry for flight STS-134.

Awesome find! Thank you! I halted at the excitement of finding the image in general and didn’t look for any higher resolution than what Google offered!

I think a retro edition would be a cool idea as well. I can’t say I’ve been too much into the history of the seas, but there’s always room for improvement, right?

thanks to your find @1093i3511 I fired up GIMP after getting the aspect ratio (16:9) to match for my resolution along with centering and focusing on the shuttle (brought the image down to 2131x1198) and was able to add the OS branding from the media images website. So now, a centered and more focused shuttle image AND a lockscreen image to match!

@joekamprad - I was just re-reading through this and couldn’t help but chuckle… when you said light setups I took first thought of the smaller screens (hence my reply) instead of the actual light vs dark……… coffee probably didn’t kick in yet at that point! But still, yes! I’m a fan of the lighter side of appearances for most things, this works great! :joy:
